I mean, a modern car in good maintenance can drive for absurdly long distances without giving the slightest issue, and a Smart is not a cheap car with shitty components.
In my experience it's very sensitive to lateral winds, so a journey like that can't be all fun, but it's definitely not that unlikely.

I absolutely pay attention to plates, especially to notice out of state ones. The further away, the better. When I went cross country I got 48/50 states (missed North Dakota and Hawaii), and DC and a few Canadian provinces.
The route is easily explained by wanting to drive the pacific coast if you have the time 🤷♂️
