The dogleg is from responding to a mayday from a sinking refugee boat carrying 30-40 people. Due to complications, only the 4 people that jumped off and swam towards the floatilla were able to be rescued. The remaining are presumed to be taken back by the Libyan coast guard where they'll be punished with violence, detention, and torture in Libya.

What are they planning to do with those refugees? Surely they can't just take them to Gaza too?
No, especially since Gaza is under a military blockade. They'll all be arrested and sent back to their respective countries. It's all just a show with no real-world consequences.
I think Israel has shown that they'll do worse than just arrest them. I'm just saying, the activists signed up to this with a clear knowledge of what could happen, those refugees didn't. So the moral thing to do is to drop them off somewhere, but that derails their whole plan as they could be detained in that port.
I guess they are under the protection of the ships flag
