I am pretty sure that it would be illegal in the EU? That's abusing monopolistic position.
Unfortunately, in the US we don't live in society of laws

We are well beyond that with these platforms now. They will identify your location and only abide by those laws based on where you are. This is how many many many subscription sites enforced California unsubscribe laws for years already
I think this probably is illegal in the US too. Whether anything will be done about it is probably a question of money, though. So, since the infringed party here is not wealthy, nothing is likely to come of it.
