A controversial experiment to artificially cool Earth was canceled — what we know about why
  • Jesus. I always assumed there was creepy, evil "rich people doing weird shit" kinda stuff going on behind the scenes there, but this is worse than the masked-bloodpact-orgy-dressup deal I imagined.

  • I actually don't understand the hate Sweet Baby gets. The most I've been able to understand about it is that they use inclusive language or something.

Is that honestly it? Because that seems like a lot of wasted effort spent hating something pretty dang benign...

  • How it felt to watch this awesome console fail back in the day
  • For the Dreamcast, specifically, there was a show on G4 (on cable, before merging w/ TechTV) that I remember casually watching a bajillion years ago that discussed what happened with the Dreamcast. Basically, the PS2 is what happened.

There's this 5 second blip of the program that burned itself into my brain where someone from Sega was talking about how awesome and exciting things were one moment, and then PS2, then *cricket sounds*. They mention how they had to stop production because they literally had warehouses filled with Dreamcasts just sitting there.

It was kinda nuts for them 'cause the Dreamcast actually sold pretty ok until people learned about the PS2's price and the fact you could watch DVDs on it, which alone was huge. Sony just fuckin instantly annihilated everyone so hard with the PS2. It wasn't feasible, timewise or financially, for Sega to iterate on a new system fast enough and somehow dump all the systems they had lying around, and they knew if they wanted to contiue to exist, they had to switch gears to be mostly software/publishing, aside from arcade cabinets.

Though (to me, sadly) Sega shed the last of their arcade board-makin days in 2021, they are the reigning champ and legends of bigass video game machines. They made more than 500 arcade games and produced over 20 arcade system boards that ended up being able to run stuff like huge Unreal Engine 4 games on dual 50" screens. They sold the last of their arcades back in 2022, leaving a pretty dope legacy behind, even though they're still kicking around otherwise. I guess COVID was to their arcades as the PS2 was to the Dreamcast.

  • World of Goo 2 released [buy from website, devs get 100% of the earnings]
  • While I do agree that it's disappointing that the game is available on Epic and not Steam (and Tim Sweeney is an assface for shitting on Linux), I'm of the opinion that this situation isn't one that should warrant boycotting. I think being able to buy directly from the developers and have a maximum percentage of the revenue go straight to the studio is the best case.

It's an inconvenience to have to manually add the game to the launcher/platform of choice, but it's such a minor inconvenience to deal with given the outcome.

I understand and sympathize with the principle your expressing. However, I think it's important to be open-minded and ultimately in support of the devs themselves over the platforms that distribute their game.

  • Microsoft's latest Windows update breaks VPNs, and there's no fix
  • Yeah, you're not wrong that the article kinda sets itself up for the "lookit our recommended VPNs" pitch.

There's no way Microsoft would purposefully disable VPNs from working. I can guarantee that they require VPNs for thousands of roles in the company, let alone breaking it for government agencies that require VPNs, etc.

It is good to know that a specific update can break something ahead of time, though. Then at least you can avoid it.

  • Doing my part
  • There are some decent spinoffs, at least!

A bit of a revival after nearly 2 years, with a whole bunch of upgrades, tweaks, new content, controller support, achievements and quality-of-life changes

Angels Fall First - Update 29 - Steam News

    Steam Store page:

Angels Fall First is a combined-arms, sci-fi wargame that first released in 2015. After 2 years, the small team behind the game has released Update 29 containing a huge amount of additions, improvements, balance tweaks, and a butt-ton more. They admit that this is a massive update, and there are likely bugs and tweaks that still need to happen, and Update 30 is planned, alongside the game's 1.0 release from Early Access.

Here's the Steam store page description:

    > From commanding the battle standing on the bridge of your flagship all the way down to tactical infantry firefights - AFF brings together all the combat you ever wanted in a rich science fiction setting. Boarding, pilotable capital ships, deep weapon customization and full AI support included! ... AFF focuses on team-oriented tactical gameplay and objective-based scenarios with a high degree of replayability....

I've been playing it for a while, on-and-off for the past few years. It's honestly a super fun game and I recommend it if you're into games like Tie Fighter/X-Wing, Battlefield, and Star Wars Battlefront/Battlefront 2!

The community's remained rather small and the devs know most people play against the bots, so they've improved the AI a ton. I'd personally love to get a crew together to play, so if anyone else is interested, maybe we can schedule an event or something?

  • Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story - Sneak Peek Trailer
  • I've got all of these League spinoff games wishlisted, they look great. I've always liked League of Legends' presentation and after the show became even more interested in the lore.

Does anyone have experience with them? Is there one in particular that stands above the others? I know they're relatively varied in their genres so it's rather subjective to say.
