I just noticed the theme from your krita self portrait and wondered how it might be haunting. But it's really clear now, for sure. Maybe it is the humidity that causes that? I live in very humid areas and you must remove batteries if the device is not used for a while. These days, every once in a while pick up some object hoping I haven't left batteries in it. I managed to collect probably 6 graphing calculators that I have no use for anymore -- I use computers to do the graphing now -- but somehow I still remember how expensive it was when I first bought them. And a label maker that definitely doesn't work anymore because the batteries leaked, but I still packed and carried with me on a move just in case.
