The Internet is Worse Than Ever – Now What?
  • I completely agree with your assessment especially with how most social media these days really dumbs down the entry level effort needed to participate in discussions.

And to your point, participating on a BBS (which usually requires a more specific interest and consequently a similar engagement level) will generally reward you with a community that is more civil, friendly and worth frequenting.

  • The open source community (or movement) is about, well..open source that many of us here benefit from and greatly appreciate. While everyone is free to agree or disagree with the personal ideals of any developer who has made their positions known, it's not fair to discount the importance of someone's historical contributions just because their current opinions seem incongruent to our own.

  • Stop using Brave Browser
  • "JS is his baby that’s all there needs to be said about the person’s motivations."

"During these formative years of the Web, web pages could only be static, lacking the capability for dynamic behavior after the page was loaded in the browser. There was a desire in the flourishing web development scene to remove this limitation, so in 1995, Netscape decided to add a scripting language to Navigator. They pursued two routes to achieve this: collaborating with Sun Microsystems to embed the Java programming language, while also hiring Brendan Eich to embed the Scheme language."

I think you're confusing the reasons behind the initial intent of JS versus what it has evolved into almost 30 years later.

  • Vince Guaraldi’s Latin Flair

I was first introduced to Vince Guaraldi (as I believe many others were) through the Peanuts TV shows back in the 60’s and 70’s, and I thoroughly enjoy all of the songs associated with those shows.

But I was pleasantly surprised to discover his love for the Latin flair/style of jazz, and I soon found myself loving the latter more than the former (but only by a little bit 😉).

    Edit: grammar

    My most listened to album
  • Agreed.

I don’t particularly care for streaming services either, and the reason I mentioned that app was because I use it to essentially “rip” music from Spotify, download it to a folder and then use another music player app to create custom playlists. It’s the closest option I can come to without having the actual CDs to rip from.

And the iPods were indeed great little devices that had plenty of storage and made customizing playlists easy and enjoyable. Those were the days 😉.

  • Okay. Do you have Wine installed?

Wine can potentially help resolve the .exe and .NET errors that you’re experiencing.

  • We’re you able to download the game via Steam? And if so, what method did you use to launch it via Lutris? Did you try launching it by accessing a file?

  • I don't have BG3 installed, but I have had some weird issues when using Steam lately. Have you tried using Lutris to launch the game?

  • This was a great series to be sure!

Like you, I have unfortunately lost the physical CDs over time which I also used to rip to my pc and copy to other places as well.

However, I did stumble across an app called Spotiflyer which I use to download songs/albums from Spotify (and other services) for free and then listen to them offline. It's great to have locally stored media vs. having to be chained to online services.

That being said, I haven't listened to that Billy Holiday album, but you've got my interest piqued and I'll definitely check it out.

I found a Spotify link. I’ll see if that works.

  • My most listened to album

Around 30 years ago, I found a CD series called “Jazz ‘Round Midnight”. Each album featured a different jazz artist with songs they played that were apropos to the series title.

This one by Bill Evans I listened to every night when going to sleep for literally 10 years and never grew tired of it. I can’t say that about any other album or individual song.

Having a weird issue with Baulder’s Gate 1
  • Another update: I installed the game on a newer computer running a different OS, and BG1 is now working as expected.

It’s interesting, I only have a couple of Steam games in my library, but they all respond differently on my two systems - some that didn’t play, now do. And some that worked on the other system, won’t on the new one 🤷‍♂️.

  • No Notifications/GrapheneOS
  • Well, that explains things 🙂

  • No Notifications/GrapheneOS
  • I don't think Jerboa supports 'native notifications' which means it relies on other services (such as Google Play Services) in order to push notifications to your phone. Some applications (such as Fairmail, F-Droid) don't rely on Google's services and use the OS's native notification abilities.

  • I ran into the same problem with Steam today, and your post caught my attention.

I had been playing Carcassonne without any issues when I tried to launch it today and began receiving DirectX errors. Trying different Proton versions didn’t work for me either.

I’m running an i7 11th gen on openSUSE with a GeForce RTX 3050 with similar errors to yours.

  • Having a weird issue with Baulder’s Gate 1

I downloaded it from Steam, and finished the tutorial. Then the transition video plays and I’m back at the main menu.

However, when I select the play Baulder’s Gate option, it takes me right back to the end of the tutorial and I’m in this endless loop that I can’t get out of. Any suggestions?

Your thoughts on additional privacy focused extensions for LibreWolf.

Outside of the default uBlock Origin, do you use any other extensions that offer privacy benefits? I only have one other extension installed, JShelter, and I'm wondering if this is an overkill or not.
