700 extra upvotes in the first couple hours on a medium sized hobby sub is an enormous amount and will give you great exposure to potentially tens of thousands of potential customers who won't just ignore it like some banner ad (since they'll think it's real content).

This is the real answer for OP. Those lights were replaced. Maybe OP (and maybe me as well, I haven't really thought about it) would prefer to still have the notification LED, but to the hardware manufacturers they replaced those with something "cooler".

So, hopefully they didn't just rely on reddit shutting them down or reddit is going to hit them with a nasty bill for a week of use that they'll have to try to fight.
