  • You get the most flexibility by hosting your own instance since you get access to all instances and all communities and you won't be defederated from unless you act in a toxic way.

The only draw back is that you have to subscribe to each community individually since you won't have a "local" timeline, especially not one as populated as lemmy.world.

But if that's not a problem then self hosting, or the next best thing, choosing a small non-polemic instance is the way to go.

  • Woah! This looks awesome.

  • Yeah, exactly. Things get bad when civility is thrown out of the window in favor of accusations.

  • It's definitely something I've considered but I didn't want to jump the gun. I do admit that I don't see the utility of the downvote button... but again, maybe it's too soon to decide and I don't want to decide for everyone. Maybe in a month or so we can hold a vote.

If things get bad with downvotes, I'll disable them though.

  • I have unpinned the latest notice but I can't unpin the main post because it's the only way to steer unregistered new users. Maybe you can block it with adblock?

  • Hello and welcome! There's definitely some glitches and bugs that are making thing more difficult than they should be, but with time things will only be better and become much easier. The fundamentals of hosting our own distributed alternative are pretty solid and in the end what matters is the users, which is where you come in and I want to give you big welcome :D

  • Sorry if you've received few replies. I screwed up a setting that prevented people from replying for several hours.

  • Test again Edit: ok, apparently communities need to have Undetermined AND English, both selected.

  • By the way, I wasn't able to reply to this thread on Lemmy. Don't be discouraged if your receive few replies. There's something going on.

  • Hey there! Welcome and thank you for joining! Looking forward to seeing your posts! Let me know if you ever have any questions.

  • With Lemmy there's actually a use case for user-only instances, which host no communities. Moderating well is tough and it makes sense to prevent brigading.

  • Absolutely!

  • They're all hosted on Yiffit. You don't need to host anything.

The self-hosted part of lemmy instances refers to the instance of with Yiffit is one.

  • Yes, I think it works if both are selected, but it's tricky to do on a desktop PC. I think it's easier on a phone.

  • yiffit.net

  • On the other paw... shouldn't a post's content warning extend to its children? I guess there's the "view comments" option which would give you direct access to NSFW images without warning.
