  • Didn't have to think twice to get Sync Ultra lifetime for the amazing value Sync has been in my life the past 10 years. Even paid for previous Sync for Reddit versions. Easy decision. Thanks LJ

  • Is this group already dead?
  • Using a bot for a period of time to generate activity and then disabling once engagement is sustained, vs sticking to humans but have zero engagement... I think it's pretty clear where the value is. Thanks for creating that bot :)

    @RandomDude please!

Edit: another thought, given that this is the fediverse, nothing really prevents the creation of a community (in this instance or another) that has the bot, and experiment to see which approach is most effective.

Edit 2: I just realized, if it's based on RSS, it won't auto update if the past is deleted or marked as expired right?

  • I don't need it... 👀
  • I subscribe to RSS feeds for subreddits that don't exist on Lemmy just so that I don't give them any clicks or ad revenue.

For answers to questions or problems that are only available on Reddit, I turn on my favorite privacy browser, I hold my breath, go to that specific post, get my answer, and gtfo asap.

Like the saying goes, never stick it in crazy. But if you have to, be protected.

  • A call for people with experience
  • I second this. As it currently stands, this community is already dead (last post before the two today was a month ago). And I like the mirroring of posts from r/bapcsalescanada since the source of posts is human in origin.

A quick GitHub search yielded this repo, which could probably be forked to mirror r/bapcsalescanada rss posts to this community. Unfortunately I don't have the means to host this bot full time.

  • Would you pay a yearly fee to continue getting updates for your now no longer being updated but perfectly fine otherwise phone? I would.

Good question. At that point I'd explore replacing the OS altogether with GapheneOS or LineageOS.

When it comes to cars though, I don't find FSD an appealing enough value to continue paying (or even begin to pay in the first place). But to your point, that doesn't mean Tesla shouldn't price it how they want and people to buy it if they wish.

  • I see where you're coming from. And I also agree with the subscription heated seats.

I think we might actually be advocating for the same thing lol. I was making the argument that manufacturers should have a one-time price for things that are packaged along with the product (with the exception of features like FSD that requires a continuing service to operate and evolve), but jailbreaking static features like heated seats is fair game.

However, your post got me thinking... If it is reasonable for FSD to be a subscription model, how are FSD updates different than, let's say, your phone having updates and security patches? We don't currently pay for new versions of iOS or Android. Granted the complexity and stake of FSD is greater than a phone, it is similar fundamentally

  • I have no qualms about building for the future and educating. I fully support that. What I don't support is the brigading and the lambasting of users who choose to purchase closed or proprietary products. That is their right as much as it is yours to advocate for FOSS.

If "taking everything from us" is the issue, there are appropriate channels and mechanisms to defend against that. If you don't want your FOSS software to be used in a priority setting, apply the correct licensing models and pursue legal paths. GPL-licensed FOSS is generally and effectively avoided by for-profit organizations. If you purposefully choose MPL or Apache for your license models, that's really your responsibility for legally protecting your FOSS IP. Apply the right licensing model, it is literally a single button to change it if your source is on GitHub.

  • I'll be transparent as to why I paid. And I only speak for me, not any other Sync user. Sync has been the app I used the most in the past decade. Sync has been what I - personally and subjectively - found to be my ideal android app experience, above all other apps. The majority of the time my phone is on is with Sync open. And this was all for free, for nearly a decade.

Reddit has taken that away from me. And the reason I'm willing to pay is to compensate the Sync dev for the value he has personally given me. While I believe in FOSS, I believe more in the principle of fair trade. And I have judged that, in my specific circumstance, he has given me more in value over the past 10 years than the price he currently asks for. And again, I only speak for myself.

And yes, the source of information comes from the serving platform (whether that's Reddit or Lemmy instances). I would have been willing to pay for a Reddit API key if that meant being able to keep Sync. But they don't offer it. And once I am able to migrate my profile to a different instance, I plan on donating to that instance if they take donations.

I've done the same with any service that has given me value, including Wikipedia. Again, this is based on fair trade and value.

  • You are entitled to make any assumptions you want about my choice. I'm glad you have your criteria for choosing the platforms and apps you like, and I celebrate that.

Unfortunately, you don't really know my reasoning for my choice of platform and app, so telling me to go to Reddit based on your mis-assumptions about why I like Lemmy and Sync really highlights the core issue here.

Anyway, good luck to you bud. I hope you have a great Friday.
