  • The whole point of LTSC is reduced bloat and increased stability for enterprise customers -- doesn't the existence of a bloat-free version tell you all you need to know? They don't seem to have an issue selling enterprise software, but the users on the home versions definitely suffer from bloat and choices they never asked for.

  • In addition to the other great answers, you can really drive the intuition about how wrong this is in students/kids with simple examples:

x+2/x+1 -- cancel the x incorrectly and this always equals 2, which should fail the smell check immediately, verify with a couple values of x.

x+1/x cancel the x incorrectly and undefined.

  • Windows 11 PCs are up to 2.3x faster than Windows 10 PCs

Based on testing performed by Microsoft in December 2024 using Geekbench 6 Multi-core score comparing a selection of Windows 10 PCs with Intel Core 6th, 8th, and 10th generation processors and Windows 11 PCs with Intel Core 12th and 13th generation processors. Performance will vary significantly by device and with settings, usage and other factors.

I mean... okay? Pretty sure that has very little to do with the OS at that point. That's kind of like saying the PS5 is faster than the PS4 -- yeah, I'm upgrading hardware, of course it's faster. Kinda surprised they only got 2.3x with that basis of comparison.

  • I have a younger immediate family member who started a lawncare business, and I have a CS degree, so I think I can relate to your situation a little bit.

Needing an extension cord and being unable to edge properly without a trimmer would be deal-breakers for me as a client, to be honest, because I'd have to go behind and finish up the job myself so I might as well just do it myself. What you could do with limited equipment though is hand pruning and trimming. Look for people with overgrown flower bushes, or hedges, read up on proper care of your local flora between trimming and pest control, present yourself as a long-term solution. You could expand this to planting/mulching if clients cover cost of materials at very low investment on your end. Offer to start some kind of food-bearing plant.

My sibling got started with a very close circle of friends as clients -- do you have any family members who could sponsor you and let you get your rhythm? What about family of school friends?

At the same time, you need to be working on your CS chops. Do you have a portfolio of personal projects? A simple static JS/HTML website? A degree is barely enough anymore, demonstration of practical skills will help you stand out. If you can eventually make one for lawn services, that would be pretty impressive.

But just mowing lawns for quick cash, I don't think would be worth your time. Don't let your family get into your head -- it's not if you can do it or not, it's how you can and if it's worth it, and I think you can get there. Best of luck to you!

  • "Get fucked", "Go fuck yourself", "Blow me", "Eat my ass", so many along a similar vein I never considered. Great write-up; I'll never think about those things the same way again.

  • Sometimes the food can do it too -- I scratched my last nonstick pan with a silicone spatula because I ground black pepper on my eggs and caught a craggy piece just right while flipping. After being super careful for months! So irritated.

  • I don't get posts like this -- his expression matches nearly every other 40+ white dude minding his own business that I've ever seen. These pics/posts have strong "you should smile more" energy
