Weekly Recommendations Thread: What are you playing this week?
  • Finally playing through all the Hitman reboots in one go (They're called 1-2-3, or now "World Of Assassination" for the whole experience, plus paid DLCs for additional missions). I played through all the original Hitman games back in the day.

While you can of course cheese your way through each mission pretty easily (NPC: "Well, he only held that weapon in his hand for less than 2 seconds, so I'll ignore it." or "Oh, coins on the ground! Better open that locked door to get to them so that you can follow me inside!"), it actually IS a lot of fun if you deliberately take it slow and discover all the stories that are hidden in each mission. It opens up crafty ways of getting to your targets & entertains much more than just exploiting the game engine's weaknesses. Truly something for #patientGamers

  • What else to run on a RPi?
  • Skimmed the title. Brain registered words "rpi" and "linux" underneath it. Instant reaction: "Not another app package format please". 😶‍🌫️

I should spend more time reading properly & less time being an old man yelling at tech.

  • Anyone actually say during an interview that the reason they want the job was because they need money?
  • I've had a few candidates openly say that they took some time off and now their savings for that time period were used up and they needed to find a job to begin paying bills from income again. I enjoy such comments because it leads to me asking how they've spent their time away, what brought them to the realization that they wanted a dedicated time for themselves and how the last job before this time off went for them. Lots of opportunity to learn about the human in front of me.

  • Warning: Google will soon nerf the Pixel 6a’s battery due to an overheating issue
  • With Android 16, Google is also royally screwing over the AOSP community. Without proper access to the source, ROMs such as Lineage, Graphene etc. will suffer.

(My advice is not to stay on Stock ROM and accept Google invading your privacy but instead fight back by complaining to Google)

  • What games are just objective masterpieces?
  • "Abzû". That's a hill I'm willing to die on. Got to me even more than Journey or Jusant.

Also, thought very differently, "Senua Hellblade" because it perfectly displayed a condition that I could never fit into words.

  • what’s the most romantic gesture in your opinion?
  • Came here to write exactly this. Thank you! <3 Another neat feature of this "gesture" (many-year effort, actually) is that you can't just buy it like a bunch of flowers or a fancy holiday. It actually takes time & commitment.

  • If I gave you a million dollars but you must give it back in 1 year, what do you do with it?
  • Use 500k to get my foot in the door at one of the 0% tax havens (they often require >=500k investment to get a legal entity representation). Use the other 500k + my savings to rake in the expended 500k at 0% tax via investments. Pay you back on time and be left with a 0% tax haven foothold that'll make me +20-30% on anything I'll invest in the future, compared to what I'd gain on investments right now due to taxation in my country.

  • Request for FPS recommendations.
  • Tangent: maybe we should classify FPS by more vectors, such as progression of gunplay (Doom 2016 is a masterpiece there, Titanfall 2 a failure), strength of story (most military-themed FPS are cringe-fests in terms of story), Lore/Tech (Bioshock's Steampunk theme always turned me off, for example), suspense (Prey excels there, COD bores) ... and many more.

This way, we might actually find decent FPS that each of us enjoy based on our tastes. <3

  • Why can't we go back to small phones?
  • I've switched fully to a 3" Unihertz Jelly Star in September. It took A LOT of customization to get it to become the "Intent" device that I had wanted it to be. But by now, it makes all unwanted behavior sufficiently difficult while allowing all modern conveniences such as IM, payments, tickets, navigation etc.

I'll do a proper blogpost series about it some day.

If consuming content is how you want to spend your energy & lifetime, then the bigger & brighter & more-HDR-than-life the better. I hope you find happiness. But if you at some point tire of not-creating and cannot stand spending your time as a targeted money-sack, then tiny phones are a good way out.
