Tour de France 2025, Stage 3 | EXTENDED HIGHLIGHTS | 7/7/2025 | Cycling on NBC Sports
  • Oh, also the NBC coverage still has Bob Roll. UGH!!! That's just a personal thing, but GOOD GOD I HATE LISTENING TO HIM BUTCHER NAMES!!! If I hear "Jonas Vingegoo" one more time, I may have to blow up my computer.

I miss Paul Sherwin so much. He and Liggett had a charm together that Roll could never hope for.

I know, not your problem. Just...ugh. Why did NBC choose him?

  • So if we're just good with careening into fascism 2.0 what does the future look like?
  • I guess I’ve just given up and assume everyone would just cut us off. I’ve really only seen negativity twords the US, so that colors my view. There’s also my buddy from Japan who advised me to say I was Canadian when traveling internationally due to the negativity he’s seen directed at the US when he’s traveling Asia and Europe.

Speaking as a Canadian, your friend from Japan can fuck right off.

Even the good people from the US (and there absolutely are some - some of my dearest friends are from SoCal) are not Canadian, and either (a) can't pull it off, or (b) skew the rest of the world's view of Canadians.

    So please don't.

  • When does Trump finally start taking accountability?
  • Oh, there are two simple answers to this:

    1. He will NEVER accept accountability for his actions. If he feels like it, he'll eat a live baby on TV and walk away untroubled.
    2. He will be held accountable when (and ONLY when) the people hold him accountable.

He will never stop until he is in jail or dead. And the same is true for most of his sycophant followers.

  • So if we're just good with careening into fascism 2.0 what does the future look like?
  • That's true, but some of your dystopian ideas require the entire planet to fall into collapse and ruin. Eventually the odds are pretty good that the rest of the world (assuming we're in decent shape ourselves) will start to provide humanitarian aide to the US.

And stating that "most of the world hates the U.S." is definitely a sign that you don't quite understand how we feel about the US.

  • Advice for a contact app

Google Contacts, like most of their products, keeps changing and getting worse. Somewhere along the way it deleted all of the street address information from my contacts!

Ideally looking for a tool that checks these boxes:

    • Open-source
    • Android, Web, and (if necessary) Linux and Windows clients
    • Stores contact info locally (i.e. self-hosted)
    • Stores contact info securely (encrypted)
    • Can store in a cloud location (e.g. Sync, Dropbox)

It seems like a tall order, but KeePass has managed to do that with their password vault, so why not contact info?

    Any success stories out there?

U.S. wine exports to Canada have fallen off a cliff
  • Sadly I can't take any credit for this drop, since I haven't bought a bottle of US wine in at least a decade.

Bourbon and a few other things (Aviation Gin) have been bought in the past and now are off my list, but that's a different graph altogether.

Interesting aside: Here in Alberta, our fuckwit premier has announced that the province will be buying from the US again. Since I never saw a shortage of US product in the local stores, I have to wonder if she just paused it long enough to wind down the current stocks in the ALCB warehouses.

  • U.S. wine exports to Canada have fallen off a cliff
  • I've made beer at home, and it's easily possible (with practice and determination) to make beer at the same quality as almost anything commercially produced.

Only once in 40 years have I tasted a homemade wine that would stand up to a good $10 bottle from the liquor store.

  • U.S. wine exports to Canada have fallen off a cliff
  • But arguably, it's not really about punishing the US - our economy is too small to really accomplish that.

It's about divesting ourselves of their influence. It's about turning our back on them and living with the rest of the world instead. And wherever possible, it's about making and buying our own products first.

  • Broke all of my computers

    Well, kinda.

Have two computers - my main one which has a failing internal drive (doesn't contain crucial stuff) and an old Linux machine which...has a failing internal drive.

Took them both out of their corners and blew the dust out - so much dust! Reseated the cables, moved some things around, and plugged 'em back in.

The main computer has the same problem as before, so I'm recovering as much data as I can before swapping out the dead drive.

The Linux computer won't even power on now. Gonna have to look at that this weekend.

EDIT: The Linux machine is back. Turns out the power plug I used for the internal drive is...questionable. Grabbed a different one and it came up fine. Well, fine to the point of recovery at least.

Tour de France is coming. How are we watching it?

The official provider is once again Flobikes - as shitty of a company as ever existed.

Even if they weren't so terrible, they charge $210/year, and that's the minimum subscription window.

So VPNs? Restreaming? Or do we just ignore the greatest bike race on earth again?

    Packed about 20 boxes today

My mom died last month, and we've been cleaning out her suite. After an initial cleanup and an estate sale, we're packing the rest up for donation. Today four of us moved most of the furniture out and got almost everything packed.

Tomorrow, we'll hopefully get the rest done before my wife and I start the 3 hour drive home.

Looking for ear protection, got a few options

I'm looking to get some custom-molded ear plugs to block wind noise while riding on the highway.

Two Canadian companies were at the last motorcycle show: "Safe & Sound" out of Sherwood Park, AB; and "HearSmart Solutions" out of Surrey, BC.

Both look good, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with or recommendations for either company. Or another option, for that matter.

    Whatcha got for me, Lemmy?

How much force does it take to cut off a head?

In anime, you often see someone getting their head chopped off by a single dagger strike. I can't believe that's feasible for a 'normal' human, but we also know that a guillotine will do the job handily, when the body is fixed in place.

So can a person with let's say a sharp bastard sword cut off the head of a standing person?

    Skip Melitta coffee filters

In Canada at least, Melitta coffee filters are manufactured in the US.

Technivorm are made in The Netherlands.

Dear Alberta: Buy American booze this weekend!

Seriously, do it. Go get your Jack (bleah), your Aviation gin, your California wines, whatever you want.

Every store with those items on the shelf has already bought the products from AGLC. They can't ship it back, and they can't recover their costs except through sales.

The AGLC is no longer buying booze from the US, which means every bottle available is money already sunk - and for small stores, it can be a lot of money.

So go to your local shop, buy what you want, and tell the owner that you know it's not on them to throw away their purchased inventory.

    Looking for replacement keycaps

So I've got a Ducky One RGB Tenkeyless keyboard, and the doubleshot caps are pretty much worn out. (the homing bars on F and J are undetectable by feel).

I'm looking for a pudding version of the same. Namely:

    • OEM profile
    • 87 key ANSII TKL layout
    • double-shot PBT
    • black-capped pudding
    • Works with Cherry switches (cherry red, FWIW)

As an added bonus, I'd like to replace the Windows key with something fun - maybe Tux the penguin or Lemmy the lemming, a motorcycle, something other than "We are the Microsoft Borg."

Best I can find so far is the enormous (145 key?!) set from Ducky, which is out of stock everywhere.
