Transgender players banned from international women’s cricket by ICC
  • I can't speak for everyone but ime when people use the argument they are often more interested equality or inclusion at all costs. Their good intentions blind them to the fact that womens' sport has spent centuries trying go gain validity / parity with mens' sport.

  • Transgender players banned from international women’s cricket by ICC
  • Sport is about competition and women who have not gone through male puberty cannot compete with women who have on an even playing field. The argument that all sport is unfair to some extent due to biological differences between different people in the same sex is sometimes deployed in bad faith as an argument for why trans athletes should be able to partiticpate in whatever competition they want.

Yes, there are some people who are intersex but world athletics have a solution for this in terms of analysing testosterone levels in atheletes, and excluding people who are not beginning from the same baseline. It must be traumatic for these people but womens' sports are only just beginning to get the mainstream audiences to rival mens' sports and anything that casts aspersions on the legitimacy of the sport needs to be clearly regulated so that the work of pioneers like Billy Jean King are not invalidated.

  • Over half of all tech industry workers view AI as overrated
  • I remember when it first came out I asked it to help me write a MapperConfig custom strategy and the answer it gave me was so fantastically wrong - even with prompting - that I lost an afternoon. Honestly the only useful thing I've found for it is getting it to find potential syntax errors in terraform code that the plan might miss. It doesn't even complement my programming skills like a traditional search engine can do; instead it assumes a solution that is usually wrong and you are left to try to build your house on the boilercode sand it spits out at you.

  • ‘Pure greed:’ Etiquette expert explains why tipping has gotten out of control
  • I tip barbers like taxi drivers where I throw in an extra £1 if I'm paying in cash. I think this makes me eccentric in the UK though; not sure it is normal to tip them. Usually don't bother adding a tip if paying by card.

Restaurants have recently started adding a discretionary 10% service charge to bills in my city but that is the tip. Wouldn't tip more than that. If they don't include it in the bill I try to work out something like 12% from quick mental maths and add that on.

I've noticed the till checkouts have options to tip in some shops now but have never given any tips via the prompt.

  • Emulating Games is Amazing and You Should be Doing it
  • It depends on the game. Dolphin seem to be struggling with movie tie-in Gamecube games still judging by some of their blog posts. There was some awful game called Haunted Mansion or similar that they couldn't get working because playing it to find the bugs was such a chore.

  • Five arrested after pro-Palestinian protesters climb Scottish Parliament
  • Wild to see people get so passionate about a remote conflict. I'm not 100% convinced it's only due to humanitarian outrage because genocide in Xinjiang did not trigger mass protests on this scale when it was revealed a few years ago.

IMO Palestine aroses such passions because it fits more neatly into culture war narratives on both sides.

If you look closely, you'll notice he doesn't treat people well.
  • Bateman is also an extremely metrosexual character.

I heard a radio interview from the author Ellis where he said he'd written American Psycho after getting an unexpected windfall from his first book at a young age. Part of the book is based on his experiences as a closeted gay man in that era of Manhatten.

  • Aberdeen
  • I was at uni there for 4 years and it was extremely expensive to rent. It was getting close to St Andrews at one point. I left in 2015.

Friends who stayed after the oil crash in 2016 ended up getting phone calls from their landlords asking them if they can reduce the amount of rent they need to pay in exchange to stay for an extra year.

  • Capitalism is killing our planet
  • Economic output doesn't have a 1:1 relationship with the planet's resources. Many countries grow by offering services as opposed to goods. Not all goods have the same negative externalities in terms of harming the planet.

  • I tried. It was exhausting. I'm better now.
  • I'm extremely keen on politics but have been a paid up member of the third party in the UK. Kind of centrists who have liberal social views. Get so much stick from friends and family for getting involved in politics to come sit on the fence! They never win anything but function a bit like a policy think tank where they adopt progressive policies before anyone else does then one of the larger parties steal their ideas.

IMO most issues have nuance and need to be considered in isolation on their own merits.

Interesting interview - it is incredibly spicy at points. Both of them lost their cool at several points here and I don't think either of them come out sounding good.

For what it's worth I think Hallam's spiel about acting emotionally instead of using critical thinking sounds pretty suspect but clearly he's found this an effective line to take when campaigning.
