Israel-Palestine megathread for the remainder of the weekend
  • The USA are deploying a second CSG to the eastern Mediterranean

I have directed the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (CSG) to begin moving to the Eastern Mediterranean. As part of our effort to deter hostile actions against Israel or any efforts toward widening this war following Hamas's attack on Israel, the Strike Group includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58), guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely (DDG 107) and USS Mason (DDG 87), and Carrier Air Wing 3, with nine aircraft squadrons, and embarked headquarters staffs.

  • I'm having a tough time choosing my next android smartphone, any ideas?
  • As another happy Fairphone user, I'd caution against getting one though if you don't see the hefty price tag as also being a way of subsidizing right to repair and fair trade. The long warranty period and support duration, the repairability, and the SD card slot might not be enough positives to offset it being bulky, heavy, the camera being terrible, security updates coming with 1-2 months of delay, the specs being generally under what you'd find around its price range and you going 300 USD over budget.

Personally, I'd only ever owned a low-end smartphone that was 4 years past its end of support before getting the Fairphone, so I've been very happy with it, but I can see the drawbacks mattering more to other people.

  • France riots: Within days we were in hell, says mayor
  • None of the "kids with the jerry cans" are doing any of this because of reforms. The riots have very real consequences for already neglected communities seeing their libraries, schools and local businesses burning down. Are you confusing the riots with the protests earlier this year about the pension system reforms?

Meta and Mastodon: What’s really on people’s minds?
  • Not convinced by the e-mail analogy rebuttal. There are plenty of small e-mail providers thriving alongside the giants. Nothing is stopping you today from paying your friendly local business or association to host a mailbox for you. Of course self-hosting e-mail is an absolute pain, but that's because most e-mail sent is spam, the drastic blocking is just needed. Similarly if the Fediverse sees any kind of meaningful adoption, preemptively blocking small instances will just be needed to crack down on spam.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Meta adopting Activitypub for their new platform. It might signal enough interest to make other smaller (and more trustworthy!) actors follow suit and set up their own platforms or Mastodon instances.

  • Ex-Aussie PM admits he hid submarine plot from Macron
  • I thought that was about the Tinanic tourist sub for a moment.

From a European perspective the AUKUS deal debacle was really unfortunate, but I wonder what Australians think about it now. Relying on the US doesn't seem that bad, and the nuclear subs really should be more capable, right?

  • What are your favorite browser extensions?
  • The <T> shortcut alone makes Vimium a must, it makes switching between tabs so much easier. The only drawbacks of the extension I've found are having to adjust settings for the odd websites that have shortcuts and certain elements not working well with Vimium "clicks" (like the Lemmy sort order dropdown list!).

  • [Question] What are some good Gandi alternatives? (for domain registration, mailbox and DNS)

I'm a bit late to the party but finally got the dreaded e-mail about the Gandi price increases. I was glad to pay their premium prices for domain registration because of the convenience of their DNS management and mailbox offer, but the new prices are just too much for me.

Anyone in the same situation? Which alternative have you moved to?

Important points for me are to be able to use caddy-dns, send low volumes of e-mail for things like nextcloud account creation and notifications, and to a lesser degree to prefer European services
