  • In addition to being a young field, though, psychiatry is fundamentally wrong-headed. It puts the brain at the center of phenomenon and not the person and their context.

For instance, let's say that instead of treating depression, you wanted low communication. Let's say you live in a very talkative society and people who don't talk a lot are suspect and considered ill.

Reasonable approaches to this social problem might be to investigate the context people are raised in, and the context in which they live. Maybe they had a father who actively discouraged them from talking, or they're in a minority that was bullied and staying silent was a survival strategy, or maybe they're embarassed by an accent.

But what would the "psychiatric" approach be?

Psychiatry's approach would be to examine the brains of people who do talk a lot and people who talk less. Then they would prescribe a medication that theoretically gets the brains of people who talk less to be more like the brains of people who talk more.

That's really missing the most important parts of the picture--the social and personal contexts. It's treating people like they are just the results of their brains, and not their brains being a result of their environment.

Now there is value in looking at the brain in isolation. In this hypothetical, it would be hugely helpful to know about autism! The problem is that psychiatry has an outsized authority that it really doesn't deserve, an authority society is happy to give it in exchange for not having to address what are much more likely to be social problems.

  • serotonin defiiciency

    Meh.

    Your brain just reflects life.

A porn addiction more likely means you're lacking rewarding activities in your life and/or you're avoiding thinking about by jerking it.

And FWIW the whole serotonin theory of depression is demonstrably bunk.

  • Plenty of places--many McD's included--have the soda machienes out in the dining area for customers to self-serve, probaby because the fraction of time it takes for an employee to fill the drink cost more than the soda itself.

I know a thrifty fella who knows the specific refill policy of each of the 5 nearby McDonalds; there's a lot of variation between stores.

  • You're assuming new companies don't do due diligence and still hire these CEOs who hollow out their companies; but the reality is “line go up” is all anyone cares about in late stage capitalism.

  • Even with the wide variability of art styles, something about that anime gene creeps you out? That's fair, but a little sad that keeps you out of it.

I was speaking mostly from personal experience. I used to think all anime was adolescent violent wish fulfillment and tits, so I didn't explore too much, and found plenty of incidenthl confirmation bias.

  • I just felt like the extendeds often include scenes that rightly belong in “deleted scenes” because they are either momentum killers, background info, or straight-up bad--like they just wanted to have the most complete version for archivists.

What convinced me off extended Two Towers was a very cringe scene between that wild, tramelled thing and the mere ranger (I'm terrrble with names) on the trail to helm's deep.

Two Towers is a pretty cut-and-dry action story, for the most part. Most of the character development beats happen in 1 and 3.

For Return, I think they just chickened out on the run timev-there's a few necessary scenes cut from theatrical, but also some cruft--like the romance with Faramir.

Testing out my new normie girlfriend soon, so I'll be doing the merciful thing and going theatrical for all three. Let's see what I feel is missing.

  • Isn't wrestling the Days Of Our Lives for guys? I never understand why people like it, watch any other combat sport and actual fighting takes place.

Sounds like you understand it perfectly, you just don't appreciate it.

The first season of GLOW talks about the connection between soap opera and wrestling, btw, in addition to being damn fine television.
