I was checking to see if there's interest in a Cyberpunk RED community. It doesn't look like there's a lot of folks who would be into it, so I'm just posting in this community.
He is completely undercutting the appeal of Poilievre's platform.
Most of Poilievre's platform is "we need a change from the Liberals". People who agree with that are unlikely to be swayed by anything Carney says or promises.
I would rather my taxes double if it meant that every person could have a roof over their head and access to adequate food and medical needs.
Agreed. Now is the time to make those arguments. We have a rare moment of national unity, and a tough four years ahead of us.
Like Coyne says: Canada faces a bunch of problems around productivity and infrastructure. Spending money to fix those problems, rather than tax cuts that primarily benefit the rich, makes more sense.
The problem is that income tax cuts are meaningless if people lose their jobs, face months- or years-long waiting lists for medical care, or entire sectors of the economy are wiped out by the criminal occupying the White House.
...
Canadians also need to reserve some of their anger for politicians who are failing in more abject ways to meet the moment.
Rather than tax cuts for the richest Canadians, I'd prefer to see a plan to address the housing, affordability, and healthcare crises. I'd be happy to see tax cuts on the lowest bracket complemented by increases on the higher brackets.
I had an elderly relative say something similar to me in the early 90s. We aren't special. People have felt this way forever.
I'm not optimistic about the future, but I don't think things will necessarily be that bad. Looking at child mortality rates alone, you could say that we're leaving in a golden age. There's a lot that's wrong, but there's a lot that's okay too.
Either of these tactics would be suicidal. Canada's real strength is its unity and institutions.
That's a weird take.
We usually have two separatist movements bubbling along under the surface. Our federal and provincial governments sabotage each other for political points. We have a hereditary underclass that's shat on by most of our institutions, and the target of weird serial killers.
Our public health agency (tasked with preventing outbreaks) had neither a plan for dealing with outbreaks, nor PPE to protect health workers. Our military has been stuck in a procurement death march for as long as I've been alive, and has had a culture of sexual abuse for at least as long. Our foreign affairs department has been running an illegal (and immoral) civilian spying program for decades. Multiple provinces were teaching guessingcuing into the 2010s. All levels of government try to block journalists access to information requests. We have a persistent shortage of healthcare providers, but seem unable to recognize foreign credentials or train more. Meanwhile, our healthcare costs skyrocket. And the housing crisis. And the cost of living crisis. And the post secondary funding crisis. And the opioid crisis.
But aside from those things, we show truly average unity and institutional capacity.
