  • I don't know if it works everywhere, but where I live theres groups of people that scavenge through the trash every week, they already take every returnable out. It's not perfect but it gives some vulnerable populations a small source of income while reducing the load on city recycling programs I think thats a win-win with practically no downsides.

As the article points out alcohol has a 75% return rate which is pretty damn great imo

  • Could you explain the problem, I genuinely don't understand. Snakes are obligate carnavores thats often will only eat live prey, a sick and unwanted kitten, that per the article would have died anyway, seems like a great candidate.

  • I despise how sprite changed to clear bottles claiming environmental reasons, when that reason was that they wanted to be less indentifiable in trash heaps and microplastic samples.

  • The best I've found is sugarcane straws. They cost 15cad for a 100 pack compared to 10dollars for 100 plastic straws, which is small enough to not matter to me.

I know for a fact they dissolve as I throw them into my own compost, and also they dissolve to nothing if added to hot water (side note, you should never drink hot drinks out of straws).

  • I'm not saying this is always the case, but if a coworker or someone i know in a professional context asks me a political question I will say I have no strong opinions despite the opposite being very very true. Others may say this to strangers or to people who aren't their close personal friends.

  • Something frustrating about canadian rail (and im guessing us is similar) is that they keep trying to make the experience more and more like flying. They require you to weigh your bag, they are trying to make security checkpoints a thing. It's really dumb.

  • I got this bad boy when we needed a new sink anyway. It's definitely overpriced, I could probably diy a system for way less, but i use this every day and it is awesome having sparkling on tap.

  • Yeah but thats the perfect time imo. Better to do it now while there is no value than if it gets big and ca users have to abandon a community they may have been participating in (not every community is necessarily related to the main theme of the instance)

  • I think it's even more ominous. From whta I've read the american version of tiktok will be entirely cut off from the international version. This means even people circumventing the algorithm will not have access to non-american opinions and will not be able to either cry for help or get outside (less biased) perspective. From a selfish non-american perspective I think it's really good that the rest of the world will be isolated from the source of facism, but it sure does suck for americans and it also gives china what they wanted in the end. Trump did build a wall, a great firewall.

  • While normally such a government shutdown is disastrous, with all the crazy ICE stuff and all the cuts to mandatory services it now it seems like the best course of action and I hope the democrats keep it up (fat chance of that)

  • I dislike Google as much as the next guy and I agree that you really shouldn't use Google authenticator cloud sync, but the real problem here is the large amount of crypto. A scammer would have a much much harder time extracting it from a bank and even if they did it would likely still be reversible.

  • I had ai write a python script for me that checked a directory for zip/rar files that don't also have video files, unzip them and if it fails retry at a doubling interval. It would have taken me an hour or so, took the ai 5min+15min of me fixing it. I also had it add logging which is definitely something I wouldn't have been arsed to add otherwise.

It isnt very helpful at my day job writing professional code though, and I dont think someone who didn't already know how to do it themselves could make use of it.

  • Spending an entire loop with chert is a truly marvelous experience, going through the stages of grief together.

Although for an ambient time, catching the probe and watching
::: spoiler spoiler the stars blink out and explode one by one :::

takes the cake for my favourite bit of ambiance

  • That turned out to be because of some prerelease ssds with nonfinalized firmware that shouldn't have been in the wild.

    https://www.techspot.com/news/109370-windows-11-cleared-all-charges-killing-ssds-real.html

The group speculated (and Phison later confirmed) that this early firmware was the real cause of the instability. Unlike the finalized firmware shipping on retail drives, the engineering preview caused crashes under stress. To prove the point, Phison ran the same stress tests (100GB to 1TB sustained writes) on consumer-available SSD models and reported no failures or crashes.

  • If you're in india then my understanding is that IPTV is the most cost effective option by a large margin. I"ve never lived there but my family is scattered between Bangladesh and india and they all use IPTVs.

but I guess to answer your original question: regional pricing
