Against Masculinity
  • I think the generally accepted rule of thumb is: if it's bad, it's male generated. If it's good, it's only human and could have an origin in any gender (but mostly female). So, no...only negative masculinity can be attributed to males. Positive masculinity is just another thing that got under the umbrella of "females can have that too".

I was going with an /s but decided no to use it, because somehow this is the insane state of affairs in 2023, the 21st century.

  • Lemmy users who feel the heaviness of depression, what issue in your life weighs you down the most?
  • Right now I'm at a breaking point. I've been in therapy and medication which didn't helped and I stopped them. I've also tried to increase my meditation practice which is now abandoned. I over examine my life and my past mistakes and dwell on the self-sorrow of being the only responsible for my failures. I feel like I'm only providing for my family and everyone, although they love me, only interact with me according to their needs. My partner is really sweet and close but like for 30 minutes a day when they are in between professional matters. My child who is now an adult is on they're way to an independent life and only contacts me when they need some guidance or help (we're really close but on those terms). I try to maintain a healthy appearance for them so that I don't burden then. I want my child to be a healthy and happy adult. My parents came from poverty and I did the heavy-lifting for decades to bring us all to a more comfortable position, although they love me also they don't have any way to help me, lessen my burden or even understand what I'm going through since they have their own health issues now and they're not reflexive persons. I work a frustrating job which is kind of well paid and never got a chance to do what I love. I was raised as a coward and I've failed spectacularly to establish routines and habits which help me enjoy life. Right now I don't enjoy anything and the only thing that keeps me "in the game" is to know the amount of suffering my loss would represent to my family.

At some point I wanted to become a writer but with the passing of the years I felt my abilities to fade and nowadays I can't even maintain a blog without deleting everything I write because it sounds selfish, stupid and childish.

I still love to read and I workout regularly. The first is still a passion, the second an obligation. I'm almost 50.

  • The Return to the Office Has Stalled
  • Your conclusion completely applies to my job. I work in a state funded non profit. We were fully remote during the whole pandemic and converted the whole workflow to work remotely. We were forced to return to the office full time 5 times a week and although the whole team hates it, the bosses argument is "yeah but We prefer it this way".

The truth is that weak leaderships benefit from everybody being in the office, because bullying and blaming isn't very effective through channels where they can be easily registered. Also, unnecessary commuting breaks people, makes them more numb and more obedient.

  • Joplin Cloud

Hi there. I'm new to Joplin and was trying to find a way to mentally justify buying Joplin Cloud although it has Dropbox support. Is the syncing faster when using Joplin Cloud?

I think I'll end up buying it anyway because I want to support the developers but it would be nice to have an improved experience through it.

    Thanks.

In your opinion, which FOSS software is by many considered "old" or "obsolete", but are in fact, in your opinion, in many ways better than the newer alternatives?
  • I fell completely in love by the look and practicality of what i see and listen about i3wm. It all started when exploring unixporn on reddit.

It's one of the things that make me sad for not being linux-savvy and even if I was I couldn't use it for my daily driver because my company/team work is based on the whole Microsoft Office ecosystem.

So I just contemplate the minimalist beauty of it.

  • The developer of Sync for Reddit is working on a Lemmy app
  • As someone who paid for Sync Pro, I would gladly pay the developer again for a Lemmy app. I just hope /u/ljdawson won't opt for a "subscription" based app.

  • Music that is good for working
  • My job alternates between finance stuff and writing long documents. If I'm working with numbers, then anything from old heavy metal, old rap or jazz works for me. If I'm writing then the Spotify's Brown Noise playlist is my companion.

  • Reddit starts removing moderators behind the latest protests
  • “90-plus percent of Reddit users are on our platform, contributing, and are monetized either through ads or Reddit Premium. Why would we subsidize this small group? Why would we effectively pay them to use Reddit but not everybody else who also contributes to Reddit?”

If I'm reading this correctly, this is blatantly assuming that he would rather loose those 10% of users who use third-party apps, than letting them use Reddit for free. He even calls it "subsidizing" them. The tricky part for the CEO-wannabe spez is to know how much of those 10% are content creators. Are users who use third-party apps more prone to post or not? Because let's face it, if he's betting on having a thriving social network trying to mimic tiktok, instagram, etc... he's light years behind. Reddit will never be the choice of shitty influencers and people mimicking each others dances. It's just too complicated of a network for such a basic user-base.

OR...he just wants to prep things up to sell and disappear. From everything I read, his Eloncrush is the most worrying part of it all.

  • The Reddit Blackout Is Breaking Reddit
  • Not trying to sound like La Palice but in all the articles and posts about this issue, they seem to miss the core of what is making users mad (the mods fight is different, although in the same direction, but solvable).

The thing to the user who's generating content and not only swiping their finger is: they don't want to experience Reddit as other users experience Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or Twitter. They follow issues, not people. If you get in the middle of this relationship between the anonymous user and their discussion on an issue, with your tricks to show them your promoted content, you'll be told to fuck off.

There's nothing to improve in the Reddit Official App. Everybody hates the principles it's created on, much ahead of the poor design choices and lack of features.

  • In response to the disastrous Spez AMA, /r/Videos have announced that they will permanently shut down on 11th June, one day ahead of the planned blackout
  • For me it's a double sided problem. Even if reddit solves the moderation tools problem which user the api (and they will because those are the tools of the free labor they explore) there will be still the problem with the user experience. Even if subreddits reopen I will never use the official reddit app, the same way I refuse to use the official twitter app since apps like Falcon Pro, Flamingo or Talon stopped working.

Reddit CEO can bargain the deal he wants that I don't care anymore. For me reddit is now only a repository where I will continue to search specific information. It is no more a place where I want to participate in online communities.

  • Seriously, what's up with big sites literally dying as we speak?
  • They can, however, be misrepresented by media, to the general public, using sometimes fabricated other times exaggerated events. And that agenda can be pushed, more than ever from July onward, by lobbying. Not that I care, because I don't give a **** about what other people think of the place where I spend my time, but a lot of people do. Even reddit had a time like that "oh, isn't that the network where the CP / jailbait scandal broke?". I'm sure Lemmy will have some of these growing pains.
