Etsy to ban sale of most sex toys, explicit content, and more
  • Well the funny thing is Etsy actually made a different choice originally. They claimed b-corp status, which is supposed to mean they prioritize social good in their business strategy. It's annoying that they seem to be so much more profit focused because if they were going to go to the trouble of becoming a bcorp they really should be working harder to stick to it.

Here's a bit more about benefit corporations (b-corps)

  • Former Lehigh University Freshman faked his father's death for full scholarship
  • The title is misleading. He didn't just lie about his dad dying. He literally forged his academic credentials, test scores resume. Everything. He absolutely deserved to get kicked out. That scholarship should go to someone who isn't such an entitled ass.

  • Put em up
  • That person went to a department that was WAY less toxic than mine was.

That said, my committee was lovely and my thesis and dissertation were relatively low-stress compared to some of the horror stories I've heard.

  • Microsoft has gone too far: including a Game Pass ad in the Settings app ushers in a whole new age of ridiculous over-advertising
  • Yeah I think the masses are going to be a tough sell on Linux until computer manufacturers start offering Linux builds with a pre-installed instance.

I'm sure there are places that do it but there's probably money to be made in just setting up Linux on machines for people.

  • Phone calls still assume the people on the receiving end are attached to a desk.
  • I think context makes a difference on whether a call is welcome or not, appropriate or not.

If the email asks me to write out a bunch of info I know off the top of my head, just call me. Don't make me write out something that I can just tell you much faster.

If you're asking something that kicks off a conversation going back and forth like if you need help walking through something, sending emails back and forth is annoying and dumb. Knocking it out in one call is faster and easier than exchanging 15 emails.

On the other hand, if you don't need an answer right away, if you need documents or images or if you need to communicate about something that requires a record of the communication, email is better.

I have been annoyed equally by getting calls and emails when people use them for things when they aren't ideal.

The video game industry is in the midst of a remake craze, but does every classic game really need one?

Your favorite video game doesn't need a remake | Digital Trends

Curious about y'alls opinions on this. I like the idea of getting new people to experience an older game by aligning it to modern graphics and accessibility standards. But capitalizing on nostalgia with quick updates to that make it look modern rather than making new games seems like just more of studios trying to squeeze money out of us.

If You're An Adventure Game Fan, Duck Detective is For You!
  • Got it right after launch. It is fantastic. Puzzles are fun, characters and plot are entertaining, and it's just frickin adorable. It's really short- I'm hoping because the dev team is releasing additional cases later, but right now you just solve one case. I finished it in an evening taking it slowly. I don't regret paying full price, but I definitely want more. Would recommend for sure.

  • Jeff Bezos Spent $42 Million To Build A Massive Clock That Will Outlast Humanity
  • From the article: In 2011 Hillis was asked why he worked on the clock instead of his biotech startup for cancer research. He said: “I think this is the most important thing I can work on. More than cancer. Over the long run, I think this will make more difference to more people.”

Am I the only one that thinks this guy is a bit out of touch?

Obsidian CEO responds to worries Xbox could shut them down, too: 'I'm not worried about tomorrow'
  • Yep. Even if he was concerned he wouldn't want to express that publicly, because his teams would all start jumping ship. Then he'd have an actual delivery problem on his hands and the chance of closure would be much higher.

That said, any studio owned by Microsoft should be worried. They demonstrated that even producing popular, highly-acclaimed games isn't enough for them, so there doesn't seem to be a way to keep them happy.

  • Biden administration moves to ban medical debt from credit reports
  • My credit got tanked years ago for a $95 doctor visit bill I was disputing that got sent to collections. Took me years to repair my credit. I spent most of my twenties with credit well below 600 and unable to get even small increases to my credit.

I hope this goes through and others don't have to deal with this kind of crap (or worse) because of the mess that is credit reporting.

  • The Distribution of Users’ Computer Skills: Worse Than You Think (2016)
  • Wow, this is bleak.

I read somewhere (I think the deloitte tech survey from a few years ago) that many people have replaced their pc with smartphones and use their phone as their primary tech device. Would be interesting to see if any of these low-level skill folks are actually high (or higher) on mobile skills.

Got any favorite resources or sites for playing/downloading abandonware games?

I'm looking for a way to play games that are 20+ years old and not produced anymore. I'm thinking like the old maniac mansion games and other Sierra on-line stuff from the early 90s, but I'd love to be able to browse old games and check them out. Happy to play in browser or download if the source is reputable.

Here's a few places I've come across in my search. Would love thoughts or recommendations on these sites or others that are good places to check out.

web.archive.org An antique dress hid coded messages that have finally been unlocked

A 19th-century book helped crack the code in cryptic notes found in a dress bought at a Maine antique mall.

TLDR The messages were shorthand meteorological readings for multiple locations at specific times. It was a unique form of code used to transmit weather data via telegram back in the 1800s that is the predecessor of the shorthand used today.

Baby boomers did one big thing we should all be grateful for

Looking for help- Anyone else having issues with Firefox freezing on PC lately?

Not sure what is going on, but over the past few weeks I've been having recurring issues with Firefox freezing up requiring restart (of the app).

Seems to happen when I have multiple tabs open but no particular sites that I've noticed. Multiple updates have come through. I'm on windows 11, using privacy badger, unlock origin, one password and the capital one shopping app (disabled most of the time).

I'm working on setting up a shop for selling my art on squarespace so I'm on there a lot. I'll be in the middle of editing something and then it stops responding and I get the pop-up asking me to wait or close the app. Waiting has never worked so I just close and restart. It also can't reopen my tabs when I restart so I have to do that manually.

I've tried reinstalling it. I've cleared out the cache though it's set to do that at closing anyway. Nothing works. This happens randomly, not every time I open the browser.

Does this sound like anything you are experiencing? Any ideas on other things I should try to fix it?
