  • It's possible for more than one companies to thrive in streaming space. Just look at music streaming industry. There are healthy competition there with several global music streaming apps and various regional/country-specific music streaming apps. All they have to do is not locking contents behind exclusivity deals and compete on price and features instead. Also, not cracking down too much on family sharing usage also helps.

  • I'm going to grab a copy when it's $20 or less.

  • Back then not everyone have a college degree so those that do enjoy some competitive advantage. Now that almost everyone has a college degree, those competitive advantage disappear and the playing field has leveled.

  • This doesn't help with counterfeit though. So many conterfeit usb thumsticks these days. They're might be obvious for tech-savvy users to identify (blue usb jack but slow ass usb 2.0 speed, or weird typo in device name), but most person probably wouldn't notice they're using conterfeit devices.

  • Overwhelming someone who's learning something new will increase their chance of giving up. Not only they have to learn how to use Linux in general, now they'll have to learn about nixos declarative configuration model on top of that. When they eventually get stuck with some issue (which is normal when learning something new), there are less resource to help them on the internet because they're using a niche distro.

  • I also recommend getting a refurbished ThinkPads for their excellent Linux support, especially newer models like the X1 Carbon. No need to worry about such and such hardware not working on Linux. Avoid models with Nvidia GPU for less maintenance headache.

  • Did you seriously recommend nixos to a person who never use linux?

  • I believe so. This line in the source code means it'll only attempt the decoding if an img element for a .jxl image url fails to load.

If you're on safari, you can verify it by going to the demo page at https://niutech.github.io/jxl.js/ and inspect the image element. If the src attributes contain blob, then it's decoded using the wasm decoder. If the src attribute contains url to a .jxl file, then it's decoded natively.

  • Have you checked the homeassistant log and see if there is any error there? It should listen to port 5060 udp. try calling any number and see if it log any error.

In my case, I'm able to connect using ACR Phone android app and home assistant detected it but no sounds even though opus codec is selected. I haven't investigated it further. None of other android sip apps I tried come this close because they either don't support opus, or crash the integration with "Padding and extension headers not supported" error, or refuse to connect because the integration can't handle SIP INVITE.

  • Theoretically, you can use SFTP. VLC for Android seems to support it (browse -> add server favorite menu), but in practice I've never been able to connect to my Linux desktop with SFTP from VLC. It's simply not connecting and doesn't produce any error message.

  • Does the SSL error also occur when you access https://yourlemmyinstance.com from curl without the extra activity+json header?

  • You know something is fishy when nft crowds and cryptobros went all in to AI.

  • Another trick is setting up a guest/secondary AP that don't use pi-hole. When your pihole is down, just switch to the secondary AP. Most routers can setup multiple APs, though not all can setup different dns server for the other APs.

  • My general rule of thumb when getting a cheap device:

    • want the cheapest device even if it has dubious ads and tracking: xiaomi
    • want a relatively cheap device and ok with first party ads/promotion and tracking: low end Samsung

The thing with cheap device is it's not guaranteed to have 3rd party roms available, and even if one exists, it's not guaranteed how long they'll be maintained, so it's not a factor when I'm trying to get a very cheap device.

  • In order to create modern tech, you'll need not only specialized knowledge, but also raw materials. I'm not convinced there would be any volunteer to mine cobalt and lithium without getting paid.

  • I wonder if it's fully locked down like ipad, or more relaxed like a Mac where you have root access and can sideload any app you want. If it's the latter, my interest will be significantly increased.

  • It's hard to afford housing in New York as a freelance photographer these days. Spiderman should create a Patreon or OF account to supplement his income.

  • it applies to every photograph ever taken as a photograph it is just a representation of the photons that hit your film/sensor

Well, Samsung is certainly pushing it to fake territory e.g. with moonshot photo where it replaces the moon in the photo with a static moon image. It's not a representation of photons that hit the sensor anymore, it's a complete switcheroo.
