+1 for Voyager, I'm with them also - have used them for the last 3 years and I don't think I've ever experienced an outage, speeds have consistently been great.

Fairly local peering too, so for my offsite-backup at a friends house in Dunedin where I also am based, the traffic only has to go via chch, rather than Auckland with some providers. Though I think some places like 2Degrees may have Dunedin peering. Not a problem for me anyway!

Static IP being one-off fee as it should be is a big tick. They also didn't raise my price for some reason when they recently did update pricing and I have a friends and family discount even though I don't think I'm friends or family :)

Depending on how dirty it is, I would assume at the very least cleaning the car removes things that can harm the paint (and result in corrosion later down the track) like bird poop, road grime and brake dust to name a few things.

Even just washing very infrequently, maybe a couple times a year could probably save the paint on your car and prevent premature corrosion of a vehicle!

Plus some people just like their car to be shiny I guess!

You can use whatever port if you’re proxying it to 8448 (assuming the container host is listening on that port which it would be by default).

If you use matrix.example.com and proxy port 443 to 8448 then it should work as your user would be @user:matrix.example.com.

You would need to portforward from outside your network if you want to access it and have it talk to other servers as they all need to communicate with your server.

Personally I wanted matrix to show my user as @user:example.com at my actual domain not as a matrix subdomain, so I had to setup the .well-known/server type http path to tell it my server is actually at matrix.example.com.

I would rate it 8/10 for ease of install, especially with the docker setup it is pretty easy.

Only slightly annoying setup task was getting the matrix bridges setup as you need to mess with some config and I had some issues getting it to work initially.

But once it was all setup, pretty solid for me ever since!

I run my own Dendrite server and have had it work pretty well.

Initially I chose Dendrite over Synapse as I heard about Synapse being quite heavy in terms of load, and my overall experience with Dendrite has been pretty good!

I run the server just for myself, but have it setup with Signal and Messenger bridges that work flawlessly (apart from one time when Facebook thought my account was hacked and had to reauth!)

I just bought (but haven’t received just yet) a Piantor from BeeKeeb and Leo upgraded me to the V2 with USB-C for free! He just checked in with me to make sure I was happy with that change.

Hey I wouldn’t mind signing up for some mod activity! I’ve got a background in tech (day job systems engineer) and an interest in modding, though no real world experience outside of a Facebook group with a few thousand members.

If you consider how many people are using the Matrix network, then Lemmy instances will probably end up fine. Just gotta convert lurkers to active participants (like me, I mostly lurked on reddit, but have been a bit more active on my home instance)

Yeah it was a bit of trial and error getting to the solution! Wasn’t helped by the fact that I use a password manager that obviously pastes the password in - and they said in a GitHub issue that the Lemmy-ui front end truncates anything after the 60 characters, so wouldn’t have seen the issue as I wasn never typing the password in!

Gotta love password managers taking the hassle out of the long passwords these days :D

I have found my issue - it seems that having a really long password (64 char) just won't work. I remember seeing an issue with Beehaw.org and long passwords, so I thought I would try it out.

Seems it has fixed it for both just the lemmy-ui frontend AND the app.

Well it could either be the long password or a specific symbol, haven't tested that far. In any case a 20 char password has allowed me to login to both Mlem and just lemmy.nz on Safari :)

I'm happy with that for now!

(This post is feeling like a long run-on sentence hahah) I also found out that 60 chars is the limit according to Lemmy GitHub issue (https://github.com/dessalines/jerboa/issues/425)

Looks like they've had issues with lemmy-ui before based on the GitHub issues. I will await fixes and just comment/post while on Windows :D
