do you use e-inc tablets?
  • I got a Sony PRS-505 from late 2007, around the time of the first kindle. At the time it was amazing to be able to travel with just that instead of travel guides and multiple novels like I did before taking up weight and space. That was also like two years prior to me getting a smart phone. Since then I have had two different kindles, but they did not have as much of an impact as that sony ereader did.

  • What is your easy to prepare go to meal to cook when you want to impress someone?
  • These are super simple, take under 20 minutes, and people love them.

For a dinner: Baked salmon with lemon, butter, garlic and dill. Saute some spinach on the side. For a lunch: Sandwich. Crusty baguette, a soft cheese of some sort, slices of green apples. Maybe a cured meat like prosciutto if you are feeling that. Takes no time at all to make but feels fancy. For a breakfast: Oatmeal with guava paste. It turns pink which is fun, then toast some slivered almonds in a bit of butter and server them hot on top.

What made you choose your instance?
  • I first joined Lemmy.ml and beehaw because when I joined those were pretty much the only active English language instances. I moved to lemmy.ca because Lemmy.ml started going down more when redditors showed up, and I didn't like beehaw's "defederate now and sort it out later" attitude. Plus I figured going with a mid sized instance is best. They aren't going to get overloaded because they are too big, and aren't going to shut down due to lack of interest either.

  • What is an item below 100 bucks that everyone should own?
  • I would say 20 years ago almost no one had an electric kettle in the US. Now they are much more common, but still only in a minority of homes. Americans just don't drink nearly as much tea as the English. The UK consumes 1.94kg of tea per person annually. The US is 0.23kg. (per wikipedia). You will find a coffee maker in most homes and hotel rooms though.

Phoenix Could Ease Parking Requirements to Support Transit, Affordable Housing
  • Having watched several of these "Texas Donut" or 5-over-1 style apartments get built on, or just off of Central recently it amazes me how much space they have to dedicate to parking, even though they are right on the light rail. I am for anything that lowers those requirements.

  • Do you have a plan for if/when the power goes out?
  • Assuming hotels within a reasonable distance are all full, I drive to stay with family. If that won't work for some reason then it is going to public airconditioned spaces during the day, and sleeping outside in wet sheets at night. I have done some camping in seriously high temperatures, and a wet sheet or blanket really does help, especially with how dry it is in AZ.

Firefighters combat large propane-yard fire causing property damage in Phoenix

I was wondering what was burning last night. So much smoke it didn't look like a small structure fire.
