I don't think it needs to be mean spirited to be transphobic. The implication seems to be that he is tying to determine whether a sex worker is trans by asking if they are a boy. There's probably a better way to word that question, but then it wouldn't fit the meme.
I had a roommate who could decently understand japanese this way. We had him look away and translate for us a few times and he was spot on. I'm sure if he put effort into speaking it he could have learned to do that as well.
Why did you install it with gnome if you're not gonna use it? Does jiggling a connected mouse prevent this behaviour? If it is a problem with gnome, as you seem to suspect, run it without a DE. Less overhead and complexity.
