  • My issue is that there's no centralized power that has control over all the instances/states, which is how federation works. Edit: So I think calling it a federation is wrong. A confederation, sure, but it's not a federation unless there's something I'm missing.

  • Huh, that's interesting.

kbin seems to do language via a dropdown below the comment box rather than community settings. It is default set to english, so that's weird it doesn't get federated as such. Maybe, since it's the default, english gets federated as undetermined? I'll try making a german comment after this and see if it federates over as german (= english federates as undetermined) or undetermined (= language federation is broken/unfinished).

Edit: Looks like the german comment federated as undetermined too, I don't see a language label from programming.dev.

  • Edit 2: Kbin seems to break it if your comment doesnt have language set to english. Not something I can fix, kbin is going to have to

Does this mean it also doesn't work if you set your comment to german or anything other than english?

  • Posts from Mastodon is transferred to posts (microblog) in seemingly arbitrary magazine on kbin

Pretty sure iirc the microblog sections just looks for tags. The magazine owner specifies a bunch of tags it should search for and the magazine fetches any posts with the specified tags and displays them in the microblog section. So that's why it looks like it's put in arbitrary magazines, because any magazine looking for the same tag can get the same post.

  • Can you open any of those mastodon links in mastodon yourself? They all open in kbin for me (as do any other mastodon, at least mastodon.social, links), wonder if that's just me or other people as well.

  • Posts from people you follow appear in your sub feed based on my observations. Doesn't matter if you subscribed to the magazine in question, I assume "following" is just subscribing to a user behind the scenes. Given a magazine is just a special user account iirc.

I haven't noticed this in my own feed yet, but it's also possible boosts of users you follow are also shown to you.

So it might be worth checking who boosted that thread in your image.

Edit: Doesn't seem to be the case, no, you're following neither the creator nor booster of the post.

  • Thing is, as I understand, on kbin, you don’t really get a feed of the people you follow like on mastodon.

There's no dedicated follow feed, yeah, but I noticed posts and threads of followed accounts showing up in my subscribed feed, even though they were made in a community I'm not subscribed to. So I think the follow and subscribed feeds are probably just merged together currently, or rather "following" a user is being treated as just a flavor synonym for subscribing to a user.

  • kbin can interact with mastodon freely, so if that's something you want to be able to do easily, you might want to switch over from lemmy.

I was thinking you can probably open the user's profile on lemmy and reply to the post from there, but testing that didn't seem to work. I assume that's just federation taking a while though, so I'd say try it anyway. Searching for @name@usersmastodoninstance I mean. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

  • I still use Reddit, I didn't move here because I was pissed at apps going away (never used them anyway), just wanted to familiarize myself before I'll be forced to move when they inevitably remove old reddit in the future.

There's still communities important to me that either only exist on Reddit or have way too little engagement here. Until they remove old reddit or that changes, I'll stay on reddit. But I'm doing my part by having disabled ads on reddit (I had them enabled before the third party app stuff).

  • Can I ask why you posted this as code? Kbin aside since lemmy code blocks don't seem to work here in the first place, even if I check this post from lemmy.world it looks very weird with the scroll bar and all.

  • I'm running Windows 11. Windows 8 and 10 both looked super ugly, I'm glad they managed to turn that trend around again with 11. If only they also went back to a good start menu... I hate that I still have to use open shell for that.

  • Who owns shitjustworks?

Lemmy really needs an impressum of sorts...

Looking at the post history of the 4 admins of shitjustworks, I assume it's @TheDude. They seem to have made all the posts about the instance, including the first post, and announced the joining of the other admins.

  • It's not really Steam's choice, they are updating their embedded browser and Chromium dropped support for older versions of Windows, so automatically Steam is forced to drop support too. The alternative is to keep in exploits and bugs that have already been fixed.

  • Boosts, from what I can tell looking at other threads. The ratio is always equal to the boosts.

I assume it's supposed to be the thread's score, which I believe currently only looks at boosts (I know the personal reputation formula got changed, but sorting by top still goes by boosts only).

  • I don't do it, I don't see the point to doing it except to mirror Reddit, which shouldn't be our goal imo.
