I have wondered if there's something useful to do if an apparent relative is making someone visibly uncomfortable in public, or if a stranger's attention would just lead to more abuse later.

Seems like quite a juxtaposition there. I wonder what the "disturbance" was, and what de-escalation approaches were attempted.

I think the suggestion to just stitch around it is probably sufficient, but an earlier post in this community pointed me to using a speedweve to basically weave a little patch in-place, picking up stitches around all the sides to sew it onto the mended garment. Looks pretty cool if you want to go to that much effort.

Bummer, I had a pretty high opinion of RPI up until now. I would say 'wait and see what results get published,' but we saw how that worked out with the elections, and I can't imagine anyone would take that money without knowing the result they're expected to deliver.
