We need to stop pretending AI is intelligent
  • Honestly I don't think we'll have AGI until we can fully merge meat space and cyber space. Once we can simply plug our brains into a computer and fully interact with it then we may see AGI.

Obviously we're not where near that level of man machine integration, I doubt we'll see even the slightest chance of it being possible for at least 10 years and the very earliest. But when we do get there it's a distinct chance that it's more of a Borg situation where the computer takes a parasitic role than a symbiotic role.

But by the time we are able to fully integrate computers into our brains I believe we will have trained A.I. systems enough to learn by interaction and observation. So being plugged directly into the human brain it could take prior knowledge of genome mapping and other related tasks and apply them to mapping our brains and possibly growing artificial brains to achieve self awareness and independent thought.

Or we'll just nuke ourselves out of existence and that will be that.

  • Razor bumps can now get you kicked out of the marines. Black men will likely suffer the most
  • Seriously, I work for a large fortune 500 and after lock down one of my coworkers came to the office for the first time with hair down to the middle of his back (pulled back in a ponytail) and a beard halfway down his chest. Management saw him and the first reaction was "that's an amazing beard!".

He kept it for about a year then trimmed it down because he said it was annoying to keep up.

I can understand some basic requirements of professionalism, but military level requirements by a civilian employer, screw that.

  • Signal – an ethical replacement for WhatsApp
  • Yeah killing the sms function was basically a deal breaker for me, no matter how much I tried I could only get three people to use Signal, the rest were all sms. When the sms feature was removed 2 of the 3 dropped Signal completely, so now the only person I know who still uses it is my mom and even she still flips back and forth between Signal and Google messages when texting me.

I still have Signal on my phone and suggest it people when they ask how to contact me, but everyone just wants to text my phone number.

  • Oh yeah... it's all coming together
  • If you look at history, major events tend to swing like a pendulum, big swing authoritarian then a big swing anti-authoritarian. After the anti-authoritarian swing society tends to keep the more liberal ideals when the pendulum returns to the center.

Not saying we'll see the united earth or star trek ideals in our lifetime, but as long as we don't nuke ourselves out of existence future generations might.

  • Study: Remote working benefits fathers while childless men miss sense of community
  • True, and I was drawing on anecdotal evidence that I didn't elaborate on in my original comment. While I know there are people who do not do well or enjoy work from home, I have yet to meet those people, all my coworkers and friend group are loving work from home.

So a more accurate statement would have been, based on my personal experience along with with coworkers and my friend circle this study is B.S.

  • WhatsApp is officially getting ads
  • I have a buddy in Japan who was a foreign exchange student here in the U.S. years ago. When he went back home I had to use Line to talk to him, I tried for years to get him to use Signal and after years of nagging he agreed to start using Discord..... well at least it's not Whatsapp.....

  • Every. Single. Time.
  • Yep my work laptop is win11, this happens every time. I just wait till the end of the day, click update and shut down, let the dog out and then give her breakfast (I work nights) then go back and shut down from lock screen.

Meanwhile on my Linux laptop, "downloading critical system files" SUDO shut down, "whatever you say boss" and 10 seconds later it's off.

  • Jeff Geerling: Self-hosting your own media considered harmful (updated). Youtube removed his content, saying that self hosting content is "dangerous or harmful content"
  • I admit I don't watch every video, I'm subscribed but I just kind of let videos come to my home feed and watch that way. I mainly use YT as background noise while doing something else.

His reasoning makes sense, so I guess I'll just continue to watch on YT since I have no desire to join FP. Thanks for the info!

  • Florida sheriff warns protesters ahead of nationwide rallies: ‘We will kill you dead’
  • While I was medically disqualified from service (back injury) I grew up around the military and most of my friends and family either have served or are still active duty. If there was a military coup I would be cautiously optimistic. I would hope they would take power, calm things down, and then call for new elections.....I would hope they would do that. In reality if they did perform a successful coup, I have a feeling that the power would be addicting and starship troopers would become a documentary.

TL;DR, either way embrace the suck cuz we is fucked.

  • Reddit subs shadow ban?

I run 4 subs on reddit, I got curious since I haven't seen any activity on my main sub. All 4 have been set to private. 3 of them are dead and I don't really care, but one is used to promote my blog so I flipped it back to public and saved the settings. When I went back and checked, it was private again.

I guess I'm being shadow banned, oh well no reason to post there again. I'll just have to set up a sub on Lemmy and move on with my life. Just curious, any other reddit mods seeing this?
