What's the most effective at helping you sleep at night?
  • I came across c/futuramasleepers when it was on Reddit and being a Futurama fan, it worked like a charm. Effect, I wore out Futurama for myself.

So I switched to downloading Family Guy funny moment videos onto my phone. They are usually 1h long, but 20 minutes or so in, I am knocked out, with a laugh to boot.

Before, when I lived alone, I used to put on tv shows, switch off the tv and let the home theater on very low sound do the heavy lifting.

Also, the guy on YouTube, City Planner Plays has been a tremendous source of sleep for me. Put on one of his YouTube videos and bang, out like a light.

  • What kinds of jobs have enabled you to have a good work/life balance?
  • Pharmaceutical delivery. Scheduled for 8 hours for approximately 10 deliveries a day but routinely work 4 hours and get paid for the 8 hours anyway. Usually start 5PM end 9ish, get home 10ish. Drive my own car, bump my own music, no supervisor hanging over my shoulder, meet cute nurses everyday, earn almost twice as much as my last job, get to pursue my crafts and other things during the day, sleep in. But when there is a work dry spell, it's bad. Currently in the middle of one.

  • How to prepare this coffee part 2

So this is what I have found as a working solution

    !

Boil about a quarter cup of water. It must be as hot as possible.

    !

Add a heaped tea spoon or two (depending on your preference).

    !

Let it steep for a few minutes, the filter/sieve.

    !

You end up with black liquid as indicated.

    !

I top mine off with hot milk.

That's it. That is what is working for me.

    Thanks for the tips.

Website hosters of Lemmy, which hosting service do you use and why?
  • My fiction writing site (www.gorillarepublic.co) runs off of Grav. I wanted to go DB free, so flat file was big, wanted to avoid WP and Ghost, so this became it. It's fast, light and works for me, thought it needed panel beating to where it is right now.

  • How to prepare this coffee?
  • No. I mean that even ground coffee in a press blends/mixes in with hot water or whatever medium you are using. This, regardless of how hot the water is, in a French Press, boiled in a saucer cowboy style, or however else simply does not mix or blend. It just floats. I don't know how else to explain it.

  • How to prepare this coffee?
  • Not instant coffee. Grind beans and then steep them. The picture is of ground coffee. It looks like charcoal. It's not instant, and despite running it through a press, it does not mix.

  • How to prepare this coffee?
  • No. I grind my beans with a burr grinder. I used to use a French press but I did not like how it tasted. So, I experimented with heating milk, putting in the grinds, and then sieving it. It has always worked out well. This is the only coffee that has not done what I anticipated.

  • How to prepare this coffee?

My default coffee making is to heat milk, add coffee and steep it for a couple of minutes before I sieve it and voila.

This does not seem to work for this coffee. I have tried water, boiling it with the water or milk and it simply will not mix. What am I missing?

Edit: I know about grinding, I have a burr grinder, a French press and I know the various ways to make coffee. None of the methods I know, work.

Burr grinder = bar grinder. I made that mistake.

Can anyone recommend an alternative to Grav?

    Hi,

I've selfhosted Grav for two years going to three, but I want to move on to something else. I am looking for a flatfile CMS. I have experimented a bit and the best I found so far is Automad, but it isn't quite there. What alternatives can you recommend? PHP is where I am leaning.

    Thanks.

Edit: Given my unclear query, I have struggled themeing. It has always been a pain and for whatever reason, documenting is somewhat unclear.

YouTube has to be a scam.

    !

    !

Above is one of my 2 year old nephew's favourite channels. He watches them everyday. For his parents who work from home, it's the greatest thing. If an ad comes up, he cries and they know something is up.

However, they are clicking the ok button on the TV far too often per video cause of this.

    !

    !

They run that 90+ sponsored content so frequently it's become crap. I've seen Land Rover ads, the one above is a house, and the most annoying is when they run other cartoons like Thomas the Tank Engine or something. If the kid wanted that, no problem. But right now the singing cats are his jam. Cars, property? Someone is paying actual money to get ads in front of 2 year old kids?

Tell me this isn't a scam.

Why is it difficult to get low-level remote jobs

I've hit rock bottom on this. I want a basic ~$20+ per hour job where I answer calls, chats, emails and help people with whatever they need from home. I don't mind working nights, long hours, overtime, holidays, I have basically nothing to do.

I have experience, I have technical skills, customer support skills, I have led 2 teams, switched to data entry, but the last close to 100 applications have led me nowhere. I imagined it would be easy to get into Amazon support or something like that, but dang, I am not getting anywhere. All I see are bait and switch jobs to sell insurance, or travel agency stuff, or benefits or some sort of MLM.

I got into CloudWorkers with the hopes it is some sort of legit cause I am in deep crap.

I have 2 - 3 weeks where I need to figure this one out, and this in the end of the second month looking for work.

Seriously, why is it this hard?

    Looking for a tool/website recommendation

For a long time, I've wanted to explore the possibility of creating a graphic novel. I am an author, have a small website that people subscribe to, and pay, and when I was discussing this with my people, they were extremely interested in a graphic novel based on my stuff. I can't draw, and I can't afford an illustrator, so this solves the problem.

I sprung $22 for OpenAI Dalle 3. Started off great, was struggling with consistency, but it was decent. Then the quality of images just tumbled.

I tried Bing Image Creator/Designer. The quality is the best. Again Dalle 3, but Microsoft don't have tools like inpainting, and consistency is a pain in the ass.

Brings me to this. Is there a service, which pushes Dalle 3 or something of equal measure, that does not use Discord (I prefer a web interface), does not force a specific art style on you, and has tools like inpainting, and goes someway to help with consistency? I am willing to pay.

Tools I have tried and will not use.

Nightcafe - Really good platform. Quality is meh for my type of stuff. Wombo - Started here, very basic and needs you to use one of their art styles. Go without and you get Picasso on acid sort of images. StarryAI - Also good, but can't seem to get the right quality.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

How to reset a locked iPad?

At my work, they recently cleared out the lost and found and were going to trash stuff. I ended up with a clean practically new iPad. The previous owner was not contactable for over a year. He left his Apple details on and his passcode was 12345 (I kid you not). I want to unlock it from his Apple account so that I can hard reset it. What can I do here?

*Edit: So, after exploring it a bit more, I found a password list in the Passwords. Literally, the first password I put in was the correct one. Lol. It has been freed.
