Oh I love this explanation, thank you for writing this all up!

With regard to their relative level of machiavellianism, I think being able to see clearly all the consequences of all their decisions makes it both a given that they would be more machiavellian as well as making it fairly ethically "clean" so to speak. We as humans can't see the consequences of our actions so we have just to rely on what our ethics tell us is the right course, since we don't really have a better guide. The prophets, otoh, do have a better guide, and we do have a fairly broad evidence base of them seeming genuinely to care about the wellbeing of, at least, the Bajoran people. So for me anyway, I am happy to assume that their judgement was sound, being that they are operating with a level of knowledge and within an entire framework that is completely unfathomable to me and I can't really assess any individual decisions they make fairly.

Yes, I did like things about it also and I am hopeful next week will be a return to form. I feel like they can't go very wrong with the Lower Decks crossover at least. (I hope...)

I'm sorry you didn't like it, Iiii obviously didn't particularly either. It makes me remember how they were all talking about already filming s2 when s1 came out. It is disappointing. I hope they will get back to the SNW of s1. What is most frustrating is that Lower Decks is consistently good Trek specifically, so they do still know how to do it, they just don't seem to want to put any money into it? Even though their shows keep eventually petering out because the core audience of Star Trek is -- weirdly enough -- Star Trek fans. I am concerned that they will not listen to negative -> lukewarm feedback because they will just be like oh now you don't like the good one either, we can't please you! But, like, you can! It's so easy! You're already doing it with Lower Decks, all you have to do is make good Star Trek that isn't some weird action movie/soap opera mash up with Star Trek theming.

I agree, although also I think their official app is unpleasant to use on purpose, because it's designed to put ads in front of users, not to actually allow users to see content.

I do normally use RiF on my phone -- but yeah, mostly I am using my PC. For me it is mostly the principle also. Especially the way it seems likely to affect blind and visually impaired users, but also even just the overreach and disregard of the userbase who creates any value the site has. :/

The impression I got was that some mods have left and/because the remaining mods have decided to reopen. Honestly the thread was a bit depressing, lots of "it's their platform, they can do what they like" and "who cares, it doesn't affect me". :/

Wasn't there a thread on r/startrek today about them deciding to reopen? I was surprised by how many users were pretty angry about it having been closed, tbh. I felt really good about the decision to close, even before I joined Lemmy.

I am unsure how Lanthanites can have a distinct accent if they spent centuries successfully blending in, but I agree that it's interesting.

It's charging GST for Australia also. I am happy to pay that, though, since otherwise it would be the proceeds of the Patreon having to pay all the various taxes, which is a bit cannibalistic.

Fwiw, it is the donations model that is most common in FOSS projects (pay what/if you can) and I think it engenders a better sense of community, and I certainly feel more inclined to pay for something just so support it rather than because of any particular "perks" I might get, which are geeeenerally not really worth the money per se. I also would prefer your time to be spent on the actual server and not on having to integrate the various perks/linking accounts to patreon/etc etc.

Meta: Would it be possible not to use NSFW for spoilers? I don't really like having all the porn subs showing up in my "All" feed, but I feel like I have to keep NSFW ticked if people are using it for spoilers and not just porn.
