What's your memory of HMV?
  • Games, posters, and singles in the basement. Albums on the ground floor. DVDs and classical upstairs. It was fun just to look through stuff, but I think I did actually buy all my music and a lot of my game boy games from HMV.

  • Kapitalism
  • Technically IP law covers patents, trademarks, copyright, and designs (sometimes also called design patents). Patent protection is 20 years (plus a little bit extra under certain conditions. Trademarks is indefinite in theory. Copyright (in many jurisdictions) is 70 yrs after death or 50 yrs for certain works (e.g., music recordings). Designs, I'm not really sure.

  • Fix Blown-Out HDR on Nintendo Switch 2 with These 𝗚𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗘𝗡 Settings (Works on Any TV)
  • A lot of OLEDs can't hit 400 nits, though, right? [Edit: maybe not for sustained brightness, but peak brightness they can?]

In his previous video, he said that if you don't play in a dark room, the second setting for paper white should target 250 or 300 nits instead of 200, so if you play in a lit room, you should be using more clicks for the second screen (but I don't know how many).

  • Switch 2 docked output
  • Awesome, thanks. I appreciate my budget doesn't give much to work with. I did already think about this one for a while - there are loads of 1000R out there, but I thought it might be a bit much, so would prefer a shallower curve. The AW has better ports and is probably going to have better HDR as well. It's still in the shortlist.

  • Switch 2 docked output
  • I did wonder how likely it is that the S2 would even be able to max out its display output. If MKW is 1440p @ 60, that might be the ceiling in practice (at that resolution, at least).

  • Switch 2 docked output
  • Okay, sure. Don't spend too much time on it, though, because I'm sure I'll end up happy with whatever I get.

I was planning to get this Samsung G50D for £242. My reasonable shopping list includes 32-inch screen, wide viewing angles (so probably IPS), a height-adjustable stand since I'll use it for some office work as well and might move it about, [edit: and 1440p]. Preferably I'd like to keep it below £300.

  • Switch 2 docked output
  • Awesome, thank you. All good to know. I know HDR400 is the lowest, but much of the other things I'm looking at in the same price range don't have any certification, they just support HDR10 in some way. If I could find HDR500/600 for a small price premium, I could go for it.

  • Switch 2 docked output

I don't have a Switch 2 yet, but I wanted to upgrade my screen and would like it to be future-proof for a Switch 2 when I inevitably get one.

According to the specs, docked output can be HDR and it can do 120Hz @ 1080p and 1440p and 4K60. Output at best uses either HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 (it's ambiguous).

Has anyone who's got an HDR-capable monitor comment on whether the HDR is noticeable from what you've seen so far and if HDR gets output regardless of refresh rate? There's a 1440p monitor in my budget that is HDR400 certified that goes up to 120Hz and beyond, but I've also read that the max refresh rate the monitor can handle a 10-bit signal at is 60Hz (not sure if beyond that it does 8-bit + FRC or just doesn't support HDR). I'm not sure if this is perhaps overkill for a Switch 2 or whether I still have scope for a monitor that will make better use of the S2's output.

Downing Street ‘exploring plan for digital ID cards’
  • The new “BritCard” would be used to check on an individual’s right to live and work in Britain, with senior No 10 figures examining the proposal, The Times has reported.

The card, stored on a smartphone, would reportedly be linked to government records and could check entitlements to benefits and monitor welfare fraud.

I'm not against what it's trying to achieve, but will it achieve that and isn't there a less expensive or better way to do it?

  • Need someone to help me create an Amazon UK account.
  • Yeah, they're definitely the same thing

In the United States, Tefal is marketed as T-fal.[6] This is to comply with DuPont's objection that the name "Tefal" was too close to DuPont's trademark "Teflon".[1] The T-fal brand is also used in Canada[7] and Japan.[8][9]

  • These were a quid at the start of prices going ridiculous! WTF WORLD
  • I was warching somebody yesterday say that since Cadbury was bought by Kraft and Dairy Milks are no longer milky. I really didn't notice it if that's true, but then again, I eat a Dairy Milk on average once every few years.

  • I didn't realise Bananza wasn't a launch title, although it's close. Gamecube didn't have a Mario or Zelda at launch. Its big first-party title was Luigi's Mansion. Not sure about handhelds, if they all had a mario at launch.

  • Generative AI is reshaping South Korea’s webcomics industry
  • The thing about immortality is really weird, but I can totally see the benefit in getting AI to do the "grunt work". It's a common story that an artist burns out from having to produce a new episode on a weekly deadline, even if they hire assistants to help. An issue is whether the AI can match the artist's style and the whole copying of other artist's work used in training thing.

Anyone picked up something good in the Easter sale?

PSA there's a big sale on the eshop until April 27. Quite a few first-party titles with a 33% discount and others with bigger discounts. I picked up Portal 1 & 2 for about £3, it really is good.

I also discovered https://www.dekudeals.com/ recently - it tracks prices over time so you can see how good the current discount is and physical/digital from different retailers.

    Secret mission: Shiny Museum 5

Annoyed that I got a duplicate, but I didn't know these missions existed. I wonder if there are secret missions where you have to get two of the other shiny ex cards?

How are people getting on in vs ranked mode?

I was originally targeting Great Ball Rank 1 for the 50 hourglasses reward, but actually it's easier than I thought and I'll try for Ultra Ball Rank 1. I'm just using my Blaine deck, with a win rate of 51%, but I made it to Great Ball Rank 4 today.

I've noticed that if I'm struggling at a certain level, if I wait a day or two and try again, it feels much easier. Presumably the better players/decks are moving up to the better ranks and it's just the worse players like me who are left behind, making it easier to win games again.

There may be a new feature/event coming that lets you peek at one card in some wonder picks before making your choice

I'm not sure of the maths, but chances would increase from 20% chance to get the card you want to ... 40%? It would be nice if it was for all wonder picks, but will have to wait for an official announcement to see how it's going to work.

Just updated the app - looks like ranked matches are coming (tomorrow?)

Manually updated the app and it downloaded some data, probably related to the new set. Wonder pick has had a bit of a visual change as well. If you can't see the new set tomorrow, go and update it manually

It's not broadcast TV, but it is British - has anyone watched Adolescence, and what did you think?

I gave it a look because it's been in the news a bit and friends gave it the thumbs up. It's a bit heavy, but not overwhelmingly so, and I enjoyed it. I'm not sure I'd put it up there as a great bit of TV, but certainly the message about what kids have to go through these days is interesting.

www.theguardian.com Wales’s 20mph speed limit has cut road deaths. Why is there still even a debate?

Research suggests the scheme may be more popular than thought, with consultations dominated by a loud minority

Wales’s 20mph speed limit has cut road deaths. Why is there still even a debate?

    > Even with the caveats about limited data and untangling causation and correlation, the statistics are striking: the first year of a scheme in Wales where the speed limit on urban roads was lowered to 20mph resulted in about 100 fewer people killed or seriously injured.

I have a feeling I'm going to miss out on the promo cards this time...

I didn't really care about promo cards, but I was still doing the bonus picks thinking I'd get both of them eventually. Not sure why my luck has been so terrible recently.

Has anyone been able to complete *any* of these themed collections?

It was hard enough getting one of each card, but five? It's completely out of reach for me.
