What is a hobby nobody else has done that you want to start?
  • Deep water version of your every day metal detecting. I know some companies already do salvage reclamation/research, but I'm talking about going hunting for smaller trinkets and seemingly "worthless" items in the eyes of corporations and research centers.

Only thing stopping me is I really don't want to be Oceangate 2 lol.

  • Thrifters/Antiquers, what are your favorite finds?

I've recently gotten into the thrifting/antiquing bug myself and have lucked out on some amazing items. (by my standards) What are your favorite finds and why?

My current favorite is a "Milan Leather" leather jacket with a UK/Ireland phone number for customer service on it's care tag. (I live in the USA for context) I snagged it for $28 dollars and can't wait to wear it this winter.

If anyone knows more about that Milan Leather brand I'd love to know more about when that company was around so I can date just how old the jacket is.

    Privacy focused health apps

I've been recently looking into watching my weight and diet again. I had used Noom in the past and really liked their services, but then it came out that they were essentially wiretapping everyone. It seems like every health focused app is selling health information now.

Does anyone know of any good privacy focused health services? Currently I think my only options are logging my calories in a paper book lol.

What's the most expensive thing you broke as a kid and what's the story behind it?
  • Sadly I was never able to perfectly recreate that cashmere sweater, though I came close. Getting perfect gauge is really hard to do on fitted garments for knitting. Mom had wanted me to learn to knit since I was really little but it never caught my interest until I was an adult. Through the pandemic we did work together to knit a modular blanket and sewed it together once we could meet up in person again! https://imgur.com/a/u4M4ynb

  • What's the most expensive thing you broke as a kid and what's the story behind it?
  • So in her defense (and another aspect of why she didn't murder me I'm sure.) Is that she'd forgotten entirely that she even wore that sweater. Apparently it always sits on the edge of her hamper so she visually sees it and removes it to her special wash bag for extremely fancy clothes. But she'd left town in a bit of a hurry for family matters and I'd even volunteered to do laundry. I didn't realize that sweater was extra special on my own.

That "on the side of the hamper" method is what I use for my extremely delicate stuff now, and so far I haven't shrunk anything. yet

  • What's the most expensive thing you broke as a kid and what's the story behind it?
  • I didn't break something expensive in terms of dollar amount, but my Mom knits. In high school she asked me to do the laundry for her while she was out of town. I knew sweaters went in the delicate cycle, but what I DIDN'T know is even the delicate cycle was too much for her very nice, hand knit, cashmere sweater that fit her perfectly.

It came out felted and 2 sizes smaller. And I felt HORRIBLE then. Now, I'm all grown up and I've learned how to knit myself. Now I think back on that and marvel that I'm still alive and she didn't come home and just bury me in the backyard. That's how I know she loves me. <3

  • go get your eyes checked
  • I like to tell my Republican father we'd both be classified legally blind and on the welfare he hates so much if optometry wasn't around. Helps put it in perspective for him how some people just "lose" the life lotto and need help to live in the same world as able-bodied folks.

  • What would you bring to an adult show and tell?
  • I'd bring my Split ergonomic keyboards I've built/am working on.

I'd love to get others into the hobby or crowd source help in coding QMK from those who are already in it. Online forums are a great resource but for some there's no replacing an in-person teacher.

I'll hopefully come back and edit this post when I get home to share a picture.

  • Gen Z falls for online scams more than their boomer grandparents do
  • Hm, like most opinion pieces, there aren't any hard numbers from studies really shown besides the initial percentages. And I immediately picked up on the second paragraph's

Compared to older generations, younger generations have reported higher rates of victimization in phishing, identity theft, romance scams, and cyberbullying.

Yeah no shit those metrics will skew towards Gen Z being more victimized if you're lumping cyberbullying into the mix! They're one of the first generations that have had to deal with their peers harassing the everloving shit out of them all hours of the day online. As a millennial, I didn't have to even think about putting up with that until at least high school. I'd really want to see what questionnaire wording they were using for the survey data. If the question was legitimately "Have you ever been a victim of phishing, identity theft, romance scams, or cyberbullying?" then I think almost everyone with a social media account for their whole life would need to check "yes."

  • I'm looking for socks that don't get holes just by looking at them
  • Adding a follow up to the sizing as well. Any modern sock with elastic will wear out faster if it's material is stretched too thin constantly. Buying socks that fit your feet appropriately will also extend their life in addition to all the advice on natural wool everyone else has already given in this thread.

    I also love Darn Tough!

  • Man Whose Mother-In-Law Wore Viral Blue-And-Black Dress Charged With Attempted Murder
  • I can't even imagine what it would be like to go viral and honestly it's one of my nightmares. Because knowing my luck it would be for something incredibly stupid that would haunt me at every serious turn of my life. "Aren't you that dude that married dress girl?" would get SO old so fast. But no reason to kill her!
