You can't do the embrace, extend, extinguish on the Fediverse because you can defederate and exclude servers you don't want to see. No one can control the Fediverse. Signal launched in 2014 and is open source. It is literally impossible for them to "sell out". If the main developers want to stop developing it, it will simply be forked.
