Given that he first claimed Trump was in the files and then apologised, the only valid devil's advocate is "maybe he thought he had some proof but later realized it wasn't conclusive". The other options involve either him trying to blackmail Trump on a very sensitive matter or withholding critical information to preserve his fortune at the face of threats by Trump, both of which are ethically way worse than the first option.
Lets assume first option is true, which is not completely insane imo, after all his DOGE team did make many erroneous claims during their lifetime which were debunked later (and in many instances it was realized that they just had not analysed the situation carefully enough and jumped to conclusions). But then we are facing a man, whose impaired political judgement skills are proven time and time again, and yet who is trying to steer world wide politics towards his opinion by appearing at extremist right wing rallies. The net negative effect of this option is just as bad if he is going to make such grand claims on world issues based on his judgement skills.
He donated a sizeable fraction of a billion to a guy whom he said is in the Epstein files, and the latter only after they had a falling-out. So yea, I won't really believe his words on the matter.
Sometimes it blows my mind how naive some people have to be to buy into this shit. Almost everyone who speaks of their war against their self described Antichrist is acting like one in major ways. This guy literally conflicts himself by the minute, first calls government control as antichrist and scapegoating as a very dangerous social dynamic and then signs surveillance deals with Trump so that he can blame the immigrants and poor people for USA's problems. For fucks sake, you don't even need the subtly misleading evil anymore, anything goes.
Perhaps it is not naiveness but more like the pleasure of having a powerful billionaire regurgitate a century long propaganda embedded in the centre of your life philosophy back at you, the comfort of being affirmed by someone "deemed successful" and not having to face the many contradictions of the stories in your head.
Or maybe she is using Epstein as some sort of leverage and has taken it too far by gambling big. Or maybe she thinks she can get the majority of the republican base support behind her if she pushes this hard enough, maybe even eventually dethrone Trump.
Among other things...
