KDE Start Search is slow
  • First you can try disabling animations, i.e., setting the animation speed to ‘Instant’ (System Settings → Workspace Behavior → Animation Speed). Then the launcher will appear much quicker when you press ‘Start’ / the ‘Meta’ key.

Then you can try disabling some search plugins. To the right of the search field in the launcher, there’s a settings icon. Click on it and then on the ‘Configure Enabled Search Plugins…’ button. (The name of the button is misleading; you can also disable plugins here.) A good strategy is to first disable all plugins and see if this helps. If it does, enable each plugin you need, one by one, until the search becomes slow again.

  • What singer just blows your mind when they sing?
  • Her name is 王OK (thanks copy paste!). I like the first YouTube comment, which described her voice as ‘like a warm blanket during a cold winter morning’.

  • Is there a dedicated place for official feature request submissions for KDE products?
  • The ‘Help → About KDE → Report Bugs or Wishes’ dialog available in most KDE applications ends with this paragraph:

If you have a suggestion for improvement then you are welcome to use the bug tracking system to register your wish. Make sure you use the severity called "Wishlist".

  • There are videos of the talks at YouTube, but with very low video and audio quality. I think better-quality videos will follow.

  • Alternative to Vector Magic
  • I don’t think this is exactly what you‘re looking for, but for cross stitch patterns, KXStitch can import images and create simplified designs with a reduced number of colours and cells/pixels. The KXStitch handbook gives a nice overview of all the features.

  • What program do you recommend to see your storage usage on your PC?
  • I like Filelight. Easy to use, with a simple user interface. And it’s free software.

I use the Linux version, but there’s also a Windows version, available on Microsoft Store.

  • Lemmy, who are your favorite small-time content creators?
  • I’m surprised that Penny Pixel’s YouTube channel isn’t more popular. They create pixel-perfect parodies of old 8-bit games.

My favourite is a video of the ‘Sierra’ adventure game Joker, based on the Batman movie of the same name. But there’s also California Games 2018 (where you compete in events like fidget spinning and drone flying) and Mamma Mia! Kart Racer (which is actually worse than it sounds – don’t say I didn’t warn you!).
