What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?
  • Lol I think over my 11 years on reddit I only had 1.6k karma.. And while I love internet points as much as the next guy it's much healthier not to even see an overall count on here. Makes me hope that they don't add it so I don't have to be constantly worrying about what my overall score is.

  • what's your goto source for news?
  • Ironically enough, Reddit. I also use Google News on the side but most of the time I’m going to go to Reddit to see the discussion, which is why I kind of am missing that on here.

Hopefully with more users we’ll get more content and be able to replicate that experience!

  • Thanks for such an awesome instance that to me personally rivals the main lemmy.ml. I will most likely continue to use this instance as my main account, and will definitely consider donating in the future, whenever you open that up.

  • For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?
  • Lol okay so basically:

    • Social media like Twitter and Instagram can cause you to have self-deprecating/insecurity/generally not feeling good about yourself due to subconscious comparisons that you make with other people. So for example, if all you see is the highlight reel of celebrities/influencers then you're going to compare your life to them and feel bad about yourself.
    • I think the main point with Reddit is that sometimes you aren't part of the discussion/you're going to be focused on karma as well simply due to how the website works and you're up against bots/other competitors for that karma. The "internet points" are addicting for some and it becomes a major distractor from what really should matter in people's lives.
    • This goes for other social media as well, the main point of the paper is how by comparing ourselves to other people (even subconsciously) we run the risk of having worse mental health.
  • For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?
  • I don't think that's possible since each instance is kind of a silo from each other with regard to your activity on that specific instance, even if you post on other instances.. Like since you made a comment/post on one instance that activity stays on that instance.

  • For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?
  • I think you can just use whichever one you find most convenient, I would wager lemmy.ml would be your best bet as it's the most active instance. The other accounts I think you could just keep as a backup in case the main lemmy.ml instance goes down.

  • For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?
  • It's accessible from every instance that is Federated with the other. So for example if I'm on sh.itjust.works and there's a Nintendo community on lemmy.ml, I would be able to access it just by searching !nintendo@lemmy.ml for example. The same goes for other communities on other instances, you would just replace lemmy.ml with the instance url.

  • For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?
  • And definitely taking a mental health break from social media is totally ok! I actually had to do a paper on the mental effects of social media in university so I totally understand where you're coming from.

  • For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?
  • Yup! I personally don't really care how many upvotes/downvotes/ratio I have, or karma or whatever. I just post based on my interests and ask questions/make posts that reflect what I want to know/am interested in.

  • What search engine do you use? (and why?)
  • Ever since Bing introduced their AI stuff I've been trialing it + Edge on my main computer. It's not so bad but sometimes I do need to use Google to actually find what I'm looking for. Currently using Google on everything else though. The AI stuff is actually pretty good but I feel like if Google makes their implementation more widespread most people are just going to use that vs Bing.

  • For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?

I wanted to get a pulse check on how new members are finding the general experience/website. Is it more confusing than Reddit or are you finding the instance system a better way of doing things as it can give you more freedom of where you choose to create an account?

I'm a new user myself but have found the experience to remind me of Reddit back in the day, lol. It's definitely giving me old-school yet modern vibes and it's great to see something that isn't Reddit growing in popularity!
