  • I'd say after spending a few days getting to understand the place, finding suitable subreddit replacements and getting the buggy subscription process to work, it's now about 75% of the way there for me. The next 25% is gonna mainly be just bug fixes and incremental feature enhancements. Check out https://sub.rehab/ and https://browse.feddit.de/ for an easier way to locate communities rather than using the built in search, which is not very functional yet.

  • I'm interested to know specifically what about the UI/UX makes you physically ill? Even as someone without a physical disability I can see issues, but would love to hear more about your perspecive.

  • See this post for our new Matrix chat room. And yes, one of the mods came over from Reddit.

  • How is Usenet for privacy compared to torrents, e.g. if a usenet service you are paying for is compromised at some stage are they likely to be able to identify you based on payment data for example?

  • There's a great short fiction podcast that touches on these topics that I listened to recently on ClarkesWorld. It's called “There Are the Art-Makers, Dreamers of Dreams, and There Are AIs”. Fiction can be an interesting way to explore how these things might play out in the future.

  • Just a gentle reminder of rule 3, "Don’t request or link to specific pirated titles". I think this thread qualifies as general advice rather than a request for download links, so I think you're ok.

  • I would suggest to add here the DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials extension, just for the automatic private duck email addresses when filling in web forms, since the 3rd party tracking blocking feature is a bit redundant in conjunction with uBlock Origin etc.

  • I used to use containers but yeah Firefox's total cookie isolation which is now on by default does a similar job and it's basically idiot proof, whereas containers required a fair bit of setup and ongoing adjustments.

  • I can assist if you still need help. Also fully on board with the server manifesto. Reddit refugee u/morcantium :)

  • I've noticed this happening on Facebook too, my feed is suddenly full of generated art. It's super annoying and non of it is tagged as AI generated, but it obviously is. A lot of stupid boomers seem to think it's real judging by the comments, though I suppose the comments could be bot accounts too. If social media platforms don't build tools to counter AI generated content we are all going to drown in it before long. I don't mind it if it's tagged as such and in it's own community I suppose. Short of some sort of whitelist system, I have no idea how they are going to stop it - I mean moderators simply won't be able to keep up with the volume of AI generated posts at some point.

  • I use Smart DNS Proxy on my media PC to access British TV streaming channels. It has been working flawlessly for me for years, watching BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, 4 On Demand etc accessing from Canada. You may also have to set your windows system time to a UK timezone too - I think BBC in particular can sometimes detect you otherwise. You don't necessarily have to change your entire PC DNS settings as they recommend - you can set a specific browser to use their DNS and just use that for TV.

  • Crypto mining has a lot of negative conotations, and for good reason. The whole crypto ecosystem is full of scammers and bad actors. And ad supported websites only have incentive to monetize more and more until they are ad infested and can only be used with an ad blocker. That's the state of a lot of the web today. Plus most big ad networks come with user tracking baked in which is another downside.

I'd rather have a nominal subscription model just to cover costs rather than see an ad anywhere. The cost of hosting per user can't be much more than a dollar or two per month. Web hosting isn't all that expensive nowadays.
