  • Trump will probably give them cabinets posts, they seem suitably qualified to join his inner circle.

  • Is there any reason why I shouldn’t drop Snopes as a reliable source of fact-checking?

I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater over one anecdote. I just use them as one datapoint among many, but you might choose to drop them.

No, Snopes can’t prove cause and effect, but just taking whatever spews out of the corporate relations department and using that as the sole arbiter of true/false is a less than useless service.

I agree with this. As reporters they should be reporting what the corporations have to say on these topic, but the problem is they aren't engaging with that information critically enough, as you mentioned.

This seems to happen with increasing regularity. Did they get bought by Breitbart or something?

They did get bought out and are under new ownership. I'm considering dropping them from my sources tbh. But the problem is, every fact checking source has it's own biases and problems. I don't know that means we should just give up on the endeavour, but it does mean we still have to engage critically with the fact checking resources, rather than assuming they always have the right take.

  • The Star-Spangled Chad

In a world where everyone was born with a uniform set of physical abilities, one individual stood out from the crowd. His name was Chad "The Eagle" McTruth, a patriotic hero who would become the symbol of hope and inspiration for an entire nation. Born on the 4th of July, Chad's arrival was met with excitement and curiosity. As he grew up, it became apparent that he was... different. While everyone else developed normally, Chad's body developed into a marvel of genetic engineering. He grew wings, not just any wings, but wings adorned with the stars and stripes of the American flag.

At first, Chad struggled to find his place in a world where he didn't fit in. Children would stare and point, while adults would whisper and speculate. But Chad's parents, proud patriots themselves, instilled in him a sense of pride and purpose, and beat him often. They taught him that his unique gift was not a curse, but a blessing. As Chad grew older, he began to realize the true extent of his abilities. His wings allowed him to soar through the skies, reaching incredible speeds and heights. He could fly through storms, navigate through treacherous terrain, and even breathe underwater. Because wings.

With his powers, Chad became a hero, using his abilities to protect and serve his country. He joined the military, becoming a member of an elite special forces unit. Chad's missions took him around the world, from rescuing hostages in hostile territories to providing disaster relief in ravaged communities. As his legend grew, so did his reputation. Chad became known as "The Star-Spangled Chad," a symbol of American strength and courage. His wings, once a source of insecurity, had become a beacon of hope, inspiring countless young Americans to follow in his footsteps.

One fateful day, Chad's country needed him more than ever. A devastating terrorist attack had struck the heart of the nation, leaving destruction and chaos in its wake. Chad, without hesitation, sprang into action. With his wings beating fiercely, he soared through the skies, dodging debris and flames. He rescued those trapped beneath the rubble, his strength and agility allowing him to lift and carry those in need. As the dust settled, Chad stood tall, his wings spread wide, a symbol of American resilience and determination. He cried a bit.

From that day forward, Chad "The Eagle" McTruth was hailed as a national hero. His name became synonymous with bravery, selflessness, and patriotism. And though he continued to face challenges and adversity, Chad knew that he was built different for a reason – to inspire, to protect, and to serve his country with honor and pride.

  • Yeah could be something like that, or a stickied post where I can mark each new edit as complete.

  • I last brought the wiki fully into sync with the rentry version at the end of October and there's been few edits since then since re-launching the community edition.

How do feel about the idea of creating a c/Piracy Wiki Updates community, where users can post any updates they come across, and the c/piracy mods (or any local instance users who want to volunteer) can make the edits on the wiki.

It might be a good middle ground between having the wiki completely community-driven and having it curated by one or two people like the rentry one is currently. And it would provide a channel for non local instance users to suggest edits.

Just a suggestion at this stage - if anyone else has any better ideas I'd be glad to hear them :)

  • i made stickers

  • Hi again OP, I've discussed with @alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com and we have concluded that the main issue we have here is that, while we like and appreciate your designs, the stickers don't really qualify as memes in our opinions. So unless you start making meme stickers, then it simply isn't appropriate content for the community.

Having said that, if you do make stickers out of existing lefty memes, or want to make new lefty memes, we would be ok with you posting them here. Maybe just double check with one of the mods here first is there is any doubt as to what qualifies as a meme, since it's not always 100% black and white and we would like to make sure we're all on the same page.

    Also FYI @caesaravgvstvs@feddit.org.

    All the best, Unruffled.

  • Love ya buddy but I think maybe this community isn't the best place for any more of these, at least for a good while.

  • Chad, I think you need to mark this as [SATIRE] in the post title because folks are taking it too seriously. I mean I obviously know it isn't satire, but we've got to keep things shipshape around here.

  • Are you the moderator of the world news community? I am and I have resolved or acted on reports that are to the opposite of what you say and you can see unruffled’s post in the powertripping bastards calling me a religious nut. Calling a Catholic woman insane and a bastard how inclusive this community is.

Let's go over this shall we? The fact you are a woman has nothing to do with anything. I didn't call you a "bastard" that's just how the community is titled, "Ye Power Trippin' Bastards". Ok, what do we have left? Religious nut and insane. What I actually said was that you are a "religious weirdo" because you posted this comment, basically arguing that it's no surprise that people without faith become murder cheering tankies. If that's not a weirdo religious belief, then what is?

So the only part of your first paragraph that isn't a complete lie is the bit about being called a religious nut.

I do not think it is too long of a step to say they have behaved in my opinion not as an admin should. You all hate on .world yet the admins here are the most professional on the lemmyverse.

    Mmmhmmm

It is not for me to say how this instance should choose admins but I stand by removing comments that delight in an important person’s ailment and I stand by a community I have moderated for 2 years now.

No, it isn't. You are entitled to remove whatever you want, but if its because of power tripping over your religious biases then you can expect to be called out for it. There were some good suggestions in the YPTB post for how to improve your community rules, but as always with you super professional LW mods, you just wanna double down on the wrong thing instead of accepting community feedback.

I do not go into your community to try and convert users to religion so why do you complain when you troll a news community?

It's not trolling when it's a legitimate complaint.

  • I've never shitposted in your community at all. If you are talking about my one comment you removed and banned me for that was critical of the Catholic church's endless cover-ups of child sex abuse scandals, then guilty as charged I suppose. If you want to moderate your community in a way that censors any criticism of religion, especially when it's a FACT, then maybe you shouldn't be moderating a world news comm in the first place, because that requires some level of basic journalistic integrity and appreciation for uncensored facts.

  • Poor Chad, he just wants to get the truth out there, but gets nothing but hate from most folks. He's arguably the Fox Mulder of our modern times.

  • ngl, that's a sick burn.

  • I'm a gender abolitionist philosophically, so I get what you are saying and I would also prefer for everyone to agree to adopt using gender neutral language and be done with it. But we should still respect the preferred pronouns of others, because it isn't up to you or me to force that choice on everyone else. It's not much different from a Republican (for example) refusing to use she/her towards a trans woman. For some folks their pronouns are super important to them, so imo it's just disrespectful not to use them when they are stated.

  • Yes, if you are aware of someone's preferred pronouns and choose to ignore them.

  • You are describing intentional misgendering. That's against our instance rules, so make sure you use preferred pronouns for folks who display them.
