Vending machine error reveals secret face image database of college students
  • It’s so hilarious/fortunate/sad that that was the name of the file. We will never find the others now.

  • How long will the last Intel Macs be supported? macOS Sonoma gives us some hints
  • I got an intel right when the M1's came out because I didn't want to be a guinea pig for the M1. I guess I will move up to M2 when those prices start to fall because the fan is a huge drag. Otherwise I love it; it was my first Mac.

  • Why are Mastodon's trending hashtags so ... dull?
  • Here in kbin you have to know the whole long address

The @ of the person do you want to follow

The full @ of the mastodon server

  • Dry Herb Vapes: Just getting started...
  • I think I'd say some thing kind of like no two are the same in a way. And by that I mean that each one has a little bit different technique. So that a bad experience with one might be because the vape itself is a piece of crap, or because of a technique issue.

All of that said, it is definitely worth the patience, worth it to your health, to vape instead of smoke though. So be willing to try a couple of different techniques when it comes to packing, or when it comes to how you inhale, to get the most out of the experience

  • Growing my instance
  • Going a little bit different direction than some of the other responses, I feel like hash-tagging (wait that's called something else now...?) content is important in helping people to find you in searching. And I'm thinking of search as a particularly important function as platforms like this are growing.

I see posts that are heavily (15 or more) tagged.... that may not even qualify as "heavily" out here in the fediverse, just something new to me.

Been thinking about this a little bit and how I can personally lean into it versus my own insecurities. So this is a way for me to exercise self-promotion.

  • whyyyyyy is moving files on a Mac so harddddd

whyyyyyy is moving files on a Mac so harddddd

It's not ridiculous that I have files that I want to move from one folder to another folder - not copy. Move.

Never understood why 'move to folder' is not a drop-down option

It's such a basic freaking function

The whole three finger drag requires me to arrange all of my windows so that I can drag stuff to a place without folders unless it gets lost in that folder that I'm dragging it past

Click and drag on a trackpad equals me opening up whatever I'm trying to move

I spent soooooooo much time griping about basic functionality in windows products

If you got a better technique toss it at me

  • While larger, more general communities are thriving on the Fediverse - I'm missing out on the niche communities
  • howling into the void

Yep that's what feels like, and it's part of starting a community because how is anyone going to find you if you're not making any noise?

It's actually exciting. During my first week around here, someone framed it as the shift from consuming content to making contact and I found that really compelling

The other thing I'm thinking about is how the other site was like joining a conversation, but here we are starting conversations

  • John Roberts Begs the Liberal Justices to Stop Criticizing the Court
  • Holy crap this is endgame. The head of the judicial body is too concerned about the feelings of the body?

So, just logically. I have a personal commitment and value to something. And somebody gets mad at me about it. My values and commitment should be able to withstand that? Yes? As soon as someone has a different opinion it's like "I can't bear to hear a different opinion (clutches pearls) and I can't stand to have my opinion critiqued"

For you and me and the lady in the checkout line (and I say that as a lady who is often in checkout lines), that's great. But this is the head of the judicial body of one of the most powerful nations - most powerful democracies - on earth. These are opinions that shape the lives of 300 million people at least. And he's gonna be there for another quarter of a century.

Like how many steps is Roberts from a kind of de facto chilling effect, and I'm not trying to be funny

Thank God for the generations who hear a public figure try to corral or control a situation and then begin to act in doing the exact opposite. Definitely need to remind the conservative justices that there are people out here

    End rant (for now)

  • U.S. Coast Guard opens Marine Board of Investigation into fatal sub implosion
  • They could save a ton of time and money by going straight to the criminal trial before all of the assets disappear

So they will do exactly the opposite of what would save time and money

  • MrBeast says he declined to join submersible trip: 'Kind of scary that I could have been on it' | CNN
  • "could have been on it" ... but without confirming exactly who made the invitation. Interesting. He's about to be asked publicly why he declined.

This whole thing is just so sad. How dare he take a vessel that had not been verified safe at those depths.

  • If ActivityPub can't survive Meta, it was never going to succeed in the first place
  • ... so I could host an instance with a magazine that is essentially a digest of federated instances, and I can add/remove based on whatever aligns with my principles?

I don't think I have that right, sorry but if you could explain it a little differently, I'm still trying to understand how the fediverse is.

  • How to Kill a Decentralised Network (such as the Fediverse)
  • Agreed. I was thinking about reposting it in my little magazine and thought that was overkill. But now I'm re-thinking it ...

  • Do you ever feel like art "art" is not your thing? [Question/Rant I guess]
  • I have an inner critic that I'm trying to understand. It's a part of me protecting me from risk/vulnerability. My plan/hope is to appreciate that the critic is trying to protect me and also not have the last word. It's hard. I've been in therapy forever, but that's OK.

I believe editing words is its own special kind of hell, lol. Having to come back and look at some thing you wrote is ... I'm trying to find a way to make that not be a drag and I haven't found it yet.

How I have been enjoying /kbin on iOS

Just some stuff I have noticed in spending too much time on this over this weekend

    • the UI has a sidebar that renders as a super long column on mobile; updates are coming. So you will have to scroll a BIT to figure out where you are and access the menu I'm talking about below

    • There are two settings menus: one in the hamburger menu on, and then there is a small gray gear menu. The gear menu let you access themes and the mini-menu bar is at the top that help with navigation

    • most users make their subscription list private for reasons understandably, but I will look at other people's subscription list to see if there is anything I am interested in following and / or just follow the people

    • you can set your homepage to just see your subscriptions. I understand that grouping magazine subscriptions is also on the pipeline

Between having a home page in my subscriptions, and setting my notifications and just scrolling through those to see everything that has been posted in my magazines ....

.... I am having what feels like my normal show up and scroll and see what's going on experience

All of that said, another user mention the shift from consuming to producing, which is really interesting and intriguing thoughts for me personally and how I relate to the fediverse

    Any other tips or tricks?

How has kbin bin (been) for you so far?
