No defense for this one, it's clearly a deliberate act. I get that sometimes a bad hit happens and that's a whole different safety discussion but this kid knocked the victim down (because football), got up, stood over him and belly-flopped him into the ground. ... because I said so. Stupidity may be a defense if the standard being applied requires knowledge that the statements in question are likely to cause damage to another. If those statements are true, no problem, that's a complete defense. If they're not, the lawyers get to duke it out in court.

Most often, that won't come into play though since a lot of states assume that the person making the false statements does so with the requisite guilty state of mind. It's not universal though which is why the non-stick dick might get away with this too.
