Daylight savings
  • Spot on, buddy. There are efforts in the US Congress to make DST permanent. The main pushback is from the medical communityā€¦ Humans are not nocturnal animals. Exposure to morning sunlight is linked to better health. Standard time provides more morning sunlight overall. However, people tend to consume more products in the afternoon or evening so itā€™s no surprise to hear businesses and their protectors, politicians, pushing for more evening sunlight. Switching between DST and standard also results in more accidental deaths and lost productivity, as others have pointed out in this thread. We have a shitty compromise currently in the US and some other countries. Most of the world does not indulge in this absurd practice, so I doubt the US will ever get on the right track in this area. Much like the metric/imperial system problem.

  • Daylight savings
  • Iā€™ve never heard anyone who likes DSTā€¦ this thread confirms my bias. Arizona has it right. We have internet now, no need to change clocks, just update your schedules for the season.

  • Would it be weird if I took something my neighbor put out for trash?
  • My neighborhood has bulk trash pickup monthly. Most of the bulk trash gets put out the week prior to pickup day. The majority of this trash doesnā€™t make it to the dump! People with trailers come by and pick up anything remotely usable. I like to think they are reusing/upcycling this stuff but I really donā€™t know. I see this as a huge win because it keeps stuff out of the dump but it does feel very dystopian to see a junk economy like something from Fallout.

Iā€™m in the USA btw. Others have pointed out that some countries have different laws regarding ownership of trash. Donā€™t get in trouble with law enforcement, get to know your neighbors better! Itā€™s not trash if they give it to you.

  • Happy Star Trek Day! What was your first contact?
  • My parents showed me the episodes of TNG that didnā€™t have any content they objected to and taught a moral lesson. Most episodes have a moral lesson so I got to watch most of TNG before I was an adult. I have since then watched most of the available Star Trek content out there outside of anything TOS. I may find it in me to watch TOS but Iā€™ve been hesitant to go back before TNG because that show is special to me.

  • hmmm
  • I actually just upgraded my Dell Optiplex 990 SFF to a new full ATX case and had to get a new motherboard. Dell does some funky stuff to their motherboard to get it to fit into their custom cases. For instance the CPU cooler clipped into the case through the motherboard This was one of the ways the motherboard was secured into the case. The other mount points were entirely non-standard so no other case would fit. I did consider making some modifications to the case with a hacksaw before deciding to just get a new case and motherboard. The new Motherboard was pretty cheap because I was using a 4th-gen intel i3. Not great specs but good enough for a homebrew NAS.

  • Do you skip Star Trek intros when streaming?
  • I watched the intro during the first season of every series. After that I generally skipped the intro. I found out they actually re-recorded/remixed the Enterprise intro somewhere late in the series when I was late to click the skip intro button. It still sucks and I hate it.

  • When you pair your Bluetooth earbuds and one hasn't charged
  • I have had the same problem with Powerbeats Pro and Beats Fit Pro. The case uses two small pogo pins in each earbud slot to provide power. These provide the tolerance required to make a good contact with the earbud which is held in place by magnets. These pogo pins are the problem. I periodically use a microfiber cloth moistened with a bit of isopropyl alcohol to clean the earbud slots with focus on these pogo pins. Make sure to move the pins up and down with your cleaning motion. My thinking is that the alcohol will clear out any earwax or other gunk that has built up around the pogo pin and is preventing it from coming back up to full height. I havenā€™t had this issue recur since adjusting my cleaning habit to include the alcohol on the pins. Pogo pins do use a spring to function so like all springs it will eventually lose some of its resistance and will need to be replaced. Since these small electronics are not made to be repaired, that means buying a new pair, most likely. However, I recently replaced one Beats Fit Pro with a new pair after almost four years of near daily use. Iā€™m pretty impressed with how far these wireless earbuds have come since the first generation.

  • What tool do you use to display your self-hosting infrastructure
  • I use Netbox. Itā€™s built by the team at Digital Ocean for managing their infrastructure. It can run in a docker container for easy management and compatibility. You can use as few or as many features as you need. There are a lot of native features and if thereā€™s something missing you can extend functionality with plugins. I use the plugin netbox-topology-views to visualize my physical and logical network maps. This may be overkill for most home labs or home networks.
