BAND-MAID - secret My lips [Rock] [2017]

The great thing about productive bands with a long and varied discography like BAND-MAID is that you can continuously discover new "favourite" songs. And recently for me it's "secret My lips" from their 2017 album "Just Bring It". (The first one where the band members themselves wrote almost all songs.)

It's sometimes said that in BAND-MAID songs, the bass and even the drums have their own melody lines, unlike most other bands where they're mostly just "there" as support for the main melody. In this song, I think it's especially pronounced with the drum part from the 2:00 minute mark - I just love it.

The awesomeness continues into final stretch of the song, which also features great twin vocals of Miku and Saiki.

Chakura - A basic Jane band journey!! [Rock] [2024]

The English post title is the apparently band's own (quite liberal) translation, the original would be "Maru de dame na joshikousei wa BANDOMAN ni natta", so something along the lines of "A totally useless high school girl became a band member". Kind of autobiographic maybe? lol

Anyway it's a fun song and they rock out.

SCANDAL - Line of sight [Rock] [2023]

Another rocking song by the fabulous ladies, on occasion of today's announcement of SCANDAL's new album "LUMINOUS" which will also include this track.

Chakura - No Title [Rock, 2024]

This all-girl rock band is still pretty new, but they have a few really good songs, including this new one which goes quite hard.

Kaneyorimasaru - Love Song ga iranai kimi e [Rock, 2024]

Favorite band, new song, 'nuff said.

Bonus: music video without heartbreak this time!

SCANDAL - A.M.D.K.J. [Music Video] [Rock]

This is my favorite Scandal song to this day. I love them most when they just rock out!

Brandy Senki - Musica [Rock] [2022]
  • That band really seemed to have come out of nowhere with this song, at least according to their YouTube channel... It is a really catchy song though! Their subsequent releases didn't become quite as successful, but they're worth keeping an eye on!

  • Citrus by Kei Sugawara 菅原圭 - シトラス (Official Video)
  • Just listened to it, that's a really nice track! 👌

Btw if you could also add/edit the artist and song title in romaji in the post, that would be perfect. Sorry to bother you again, I should have written this in my first comment.

  • Wake Up, Girls! - ONE IN A BILLION (Restaurant to Another World OP) [Live]
  • Yes, I watched it (the first season at least) and quite liked it. It's what brought on this post basically. I had decided to watch it when I was looking for my next idol anime after my "gateway drug" Zombieland Saga, and the connection to that via Minami Tanaka, and also that I vaguely remembered Yoshino Aoyama was part of it, were what gave the impulse.

There are also a few Wake Up, Girls! anime movies that I couldn't watch yet, and a continuation series "Shin Sou". The drastically altered character designs in the latter unfortunately felt off-putting to me, after the more realistic style of the first season.

  • Wake Up, Girls! - ONE IN A BILLION (Restaurant to Another World OP) [Live]

Wake Up, Girls! was an idol unit active from 2014 to 2019 whose leader was none other than Yoshino Aoyama, voice of Hitori "Bocchi" Gotou in Bocchi the Rock. In this performance of the opening theme from Restaurant to Another World, originally a collaboration with Mayn, she's the one singing the very first line, with the light blue ribbon.

Far from the absolute nobody before Bocchi the Rock she's sometimes painted as (also by her own presentation), she had before already led this unit throughout the years, culminating in this final concert in a brimful Saitama Super Arena in front of about 35,000 people (full concert playlist) that wowed her senpais Rie Takahashi and Reina Ueda.

During the unit's active years, she also voiced the character based on herself in various accompanying anime productions.

After the unit disbanded after this concert, the only other member that continued to be significantly active in the idol and/or anime space AFAIK is Minami Tanaka, who e.g. went on to become part of Franchouchou in Zombieland Saga.

Wake Up, Girls! - ONE IN A BILLION (Restaurant to Another World OP) [Live]

Continuing the theme of seiyuu from Bocchi the Rock and also my first forays into idol groups: Wake Up, Girls! was an idol unit active from 2014 to 2019 whose leader was none other than Yoshino Aoyama, voice of Hitori "Bocchi" Gotou. (She's the one singing the very first line in this performance, with the light blue ribbon.)

Ikumi Hasegawa - Kataomoi (Aimer cover, from CrosSing)

A wonderful interpretation by one of my favorite seiyuu (voiced Kita from Bocchi the Rock and sung most of the songs from the show, among others) of the beautiful love song by Aimer.

Another iconic song borne from the Monogatari anime series. This was used as the first ending theme.

Chiwa Saitou - Staple Stable (Bakemonogatari OP1)

The anime adaptation of the Monogatari series has produced many songs that even people like me who never watched it know, like the iconic Renai Circulation. This one however, used as the first opening theme, stuck with me as the one I found most beautiful, with its kind of melancholic mood.

SCANDAL - Highlight no Naka de Bokura Zutto [2023]
  • Sorry for replying so late, I first wanted to get a better impression of their evolution for myself. I think as a general rule, I like their more recent stuff more? Image, Take Me Out, A.M.D.K.J. - the more rock styled songs. I also really like Mirror, as a recent slower song. But among their earlier stuff, Shunkan Sentimental is also great. I also kind of like Scandal Baby, while Shoujo S does nothing for me... it's pretty random. Though I have to say that the blatant pushing of their schoolgirl image in their earlier videos and concerts is a bit off-putting to me. I mean they were basically schoolgirls back then, but still... I prefer the later stuff where they show their individuality.

  • Neon Genesis Evangelion - A Cruel Angel's Thesis Live - 残酷な天使のテーゼ - Yoko Takahashi with Lyrics
  • Absolutely timeless and a banger! I think this was the first song I actively sought out and listened to as an "anime" song, and I couldn't get enough of it for a long time.

About this performance I'll say, the background dancers' choreography is certainly... interesting lol

  • Franchouchou - Gekkou Survive (from Zombieland Saga Revenge) [Live]

Recently I commented here that I might finally be getting into idol stuff in my old years, and it seems to be really happening via the gateway of idol anime... This song is from the second season of Zombieland Saga and I chose it because it's actually pretty great as a rock song (though not "death metal" as billed in that video).

The anime seiyuu actually formed an idol unit and did several big concerts with all the songs from the show. And most of the songs are really pretty great.

    BAND-MAID - Hibana [2021]

Another song to get hyped for the weekend! It also has some rap sections and a similar energy like the Gacharic Spin song I posted IMO.

Gacharic Spin - Kachi-kachi Yama (Official Music Video) [2023]

Gacharic Spin - another band I've heard a lot of praise for that I'm just now getting into. They are definitely very talented and bring some crazy energy! So definitely the right stuff to get you fired up for the weekend!

Kaneyorimasaru - Kimi ni sayonara [Rock] [2023]
  • This weekend is still going to be very busy, then it's getting better. :)

I haven't even fully watched the last concert BluRay I ordered (Band-Maid), so I've been putting off my next purchase. :D

  • SCANDAL - Highlight no Naka de Bokura Zutto [2023]
  • I'm still slowly catching up with Scandal so to speak, though to be honest mostly their "greatest hits". It's crazy how productive they've been through all those years. And although not all songs are really my thing, they are definitely insanely versatile. And most importantly, they still seem to enjoy very much what they're doing!
And that is actually one of the greatest appeals a band can have to me. Nothing worse than a veteran band where the members seem to be only in it out of habit or for the money but can't seem to stand each other anymore.

  • Kaneyorimasaru - Kimi ni sayonara [Rock] [2023]
  • Thanks for posting this! Actually I didn't have a chance to properly listen to this until just now! The last weeks were just crazy busy for me, which is also why I wasn't really active here recently...

But yeah, typically great song by Kaneyorimasaru I say! I wanted to write that it's a repeating pattern with them to show young women going through heartbreak in their MVs, but after a quick scan through YouTube, the only other one I found is 26. That one just seems to have left a big impression on me. 😅

I just kind of want to post a MV with a happy couple to balance it out now 😁

  • Kuroneko (96neko) - Uso No Hibana [2017]

An original song by 96neko, the opening for the anime Kuzu no honkai (Scum's Wish). Really dynamic, slightly melancholic, right up my alley. 😄 (Also obligatory Watch Scum's Wish, you cowards!)

I think I also once saw a video of 96neko doing a live performance of the song together with other cast from the anime somewhere during some event, but can't find it anymore.

    cluppo - PEACE&LOVE (Official Music Video) [2021]

"cluppo" is the name of the solo side project of Miku Kobato, founder of BAND-MAID. I really like this fun and poppy song, partly because it's such a stark contrast to BAND-MAID's usual hard rock style.

Edit: I can't keep Lemmy from HTML-escaping the "&" character in the title :(

    2
HOTEI - Andromeda (feat. AiNA THE END) [Rock] [2023]
  • That's really an impressive song born from this collaboration! You're right, it does feel like from a musical, especially with the dialogue between the two parts. Also an great variety of musical styles incorporated there... At times it kind of seemed reminiscent of The Smashing Pumpkins, other sections were kind of 80s synth-pop, Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody?) or David Bowie... Pretty wild!

  • *Permanently Deleted*
  • Man, you might just get me into idol stuff in my old days... Until recently, "idol" was basically synonymous with highly polished, overproduced and a squeaky clean image in my mind. So "underground idol" was basically an oxymoron to me. But this performance is really raw, in the good sense, i.e. gives an authentic impression. I really liked it!

When you say you've been talking with them (also in the 100-YOKAI post), do you mean on Twitter? Or are you in Japan and could actually meet them at events?

  • *Permanently Deleted*
  • Cheers!

That's really interesting! Feel free to post more about them if you like. Do they talk about which youkai each member represents for example? Or is that obvious to an average Japanese person just by looking at them?

  • ZUTOMAYO - Stay Foolish [2021]

There hasn't been a ZUTOMAYO post in this community yet, and I'm here to correct that today. Of course there are many great songs to post, ACAne is just an insanely talented musician. But this one is my favorite recently, I like how it is both melancholic and funky at the same time.

    Kaneyorimasaru - 26 [Rock, 2023]

A number song to go with my other post about a number band.

THE NUMBERS MASON, WHAT DO THEY MEAN? No idea to be honest.

This is a more melancholic song by one of my favorite girl rock bands, nicely contrasting IMO the singers "cute" voice.

    35.7 - Highway [Rock, 2021]

I had posted this song in a comment underneath a post for another song by this band, but decided that it deserves a post of its own. This band just deserves more exposure. I really like the singer's melancholic vocals here.

Maaya Sakamoto, Youko Kanno - Yakusoku wa iranai (Vision of Escaflowne OP) [Live]

I just came across this live video of two of the greatest personalities of anime music. Unfortunately it ends a bit abruptly, I think because they were transitioning into the next song. But the beginning with Kanno on the piano is all the more precious!
