What is a good second career?
  • It's the Blended Retirement System and it is a blend of a pension and an employer-sponsored retirement account. In the BRS service members went from 2.5% per year of service to 2% and gained a 5% match to their Thrift Savings Plan. So a member retiring at 20 years in the BRS would receive 40% of their base pay as pension vs 50% under the traditional military retirement system.

  • Anyone in the Cleveland area know this nazi?
  • No. There is such a thing as "national socialist black metal", but trying to correlate a baphomet tattoo with NSBM is a stretch. He very well could be a Nazi, but I wouldn't associate that with satanism solely from some images. There are assholes in every religion, we don't need another satanic panic out of ignorance and fear.

  • Shuffling the peppers

Shuffling around my peppers to make room for the tomatoes I just planted up.

The Daily Check In For Monday May 20th - Just For Today, We Are NOT Drinking!
  • I'm a proud new dad as of last week and I'm also proud to say that she gets to know sober dad. My motivation is still internal but she's given me another awesome reason to be the best version of myself. Day 629, IWNDWYT.

  • So, what's in your toolbox?
  • I'm not one for groups as an introvert, but I listen to the Recovery Elevator podcast for the connection piece. My dog is my best buddy, and he always just listens and lets me rubber duck my problems.

Now that the weather doesn't suck, I'm going for a run when I get the "this calls for a drink" kinda frustration. Yard work is becoming my new meditation.

Play the tape forward is a classic goto. The tried and true, sleep it off and try again tomorrow hasn't failed me yet.

... Oh and I use the Habits app with a "IWNDWYT" widget to count my days. I tick it off in the morning and the mental hurdle to uncheck the box and break my streak helps against even having one drink.

  • Utah couple accidentally ships pet cat to Southern California in Amazon return package
  • without her and her family’s knowledge, Galena hopped inside a package full of products they were returning to Amazon.

I wonder if someone in the family is "surprised" and "relieved" on the outside but very disappointed on the inside that their plan to get rid of the cat got foiled.

  • Spouse - 0; garage door opener - 3
  • One strategy that worked with my spouse since it was also new for them is to temporarily shift into reverse before shifting into park. The back up camera let's them visually confirm that they have made it far enough into the garage. You can even place tape down for them to indicate off of.

I back my vehicle into parking spaces almost exclusively so it was natural for me, but it did take them some getting used to. Now we have no issues and they're confident each time.

  • Self-hosted or personal email solutions?

I have a unique name, think John Doe, and I'm hoping to create a unique and "professional" looking email account like johndoe@gmail.com or john@doe.com. Since my name is common, all reasonable permutations are taken. I was considering purchasing a domain with something unique, then making personal family email accounts for john@mydoe.com jane@mydoe.com etc.

Consider that I'm starting from scratch (I am). Is there a preferred domain registrar, are GoDaddy or NameCheap good enough? Are there prebuilt services I can just point my domain to or do I need to spin up a VPS and install my own services? Are there concerns tying my accounts to a service that might go under or are some "too big to fail"?

I can expand what hangs off the domain later, but for now I just need a way to make my own email addresses and use them with the relative ease of Gmail or others. Thanks in advance!!

    Dry January

Noticed today in the daily check-in that someone stumbled into the community and committed to not drinking today. Pretty cool!

Are we able to drum something up to encourage a larger participation in a Dry January across the fediverse? I'm not sure how to spread the word, but I've always been a fan of pairing new years resolutions with sober curiosity.

I'd certainly be motivated to actively participate.

    I just ate a s'more...

...and it was amazing!! The fact that this delicious treat is reserved for camping trips is a shame. A bit too rich to have more than one, so the bright side is we have extras to do it again!
