  • I was hoping we wouldn't have to deal with another summer of this bullshit.

What's the best response to this? Put up flags of other countries alongside? Use their move against them and see if they take yours down?

I'm wary of taking them down because 1) you get assaulted and used for content and 2) I feel they're looking for a provocation and an excuse to dog whistle "I'm being censored and can't even be proud of my country anymore". But then maybe you should just take them down anyway because you can't win either way.

  • NHS England is demanding that data workers across the NHS, from local hospitals to national teams, put huge amounts of sensitive health data into Palantir's FDP. Meanwhile, Palantir's UK CEO, Louis Mosley, publicly confirmed that if Reform UK wins the next election with a “clear public mandate” to share health data for the purposes of mass deportation efforts, the company will adhere to this.

  • Overall, a great season! The game design was excellent. There were a couple of slower episodes but the strategic moments were really tense. The layers of strategy with Sam and Mike skipping the challenges and going negative because they knew there was the steal was good to watch, they managed to portray the 2-3 steps ahead in a really clear way.

I think that Sam and Mike were too scared of the steal at the end. Should they have just gone for for the challenges and got some extra coins, steal be damned? It's funny how I was confident they would win throughout the whole game with this strategy, but it all fell apart in the end.

The last few minutes with the tiger was really funny. We were screaming at the TV "it's obviously a tiger!!" Mike cringing and mouthing at the camera was so relatable.

  • For me, the worst part is:

The research agency was explicitly designed to be free from “red tape.” At Cummings’ behest, the Conservative government made the new agency exempt from the Freedom of Information Act. Last year, Democracy for Sale won a legal challenge, which found ARIA must still respond to environmental transparency requests.

  • Time and again it seems that the entire purpose of the royal family is to seem a bit mystical and special to the Americans.

I'd like their constitutional role to be completely removed from the UK, but we should just not tell the Americans them and keep sending them over.

  • I liked the cut from "I hope they mess it up" to Mike going "uhhhh" with the inconsistently shaped paving stone.

I had thought that Sam and MIke were going to run away with it, but remembering the high-speed line to Taipei, hopefully Ben and Adam are still in with a shot!

I felt like this and the previous episode were a little uneventful, but hopefully it will all build to a good finale!

  • The beginning of the 6 hour snack zone was really funny, when they eat the crisps and then don't say anything about them, then go immediately into strategising while the music's still playing in the background 😄 that said, I was a bit sad that we didn't get to see that many snacks.

I would be interested to see an alternate universe where Ben and Adam did push through and went into debt to break through the wall. The top right challenge looked pretty tempting to me, but that said, I haven't done the maths to the extent they must have done.

The edit from "we can't waste time" to "we're stuck here for another hour" was pretty funny!

  • It was very funny seeing him say "ok, we'll do it, it's a choo choo chew" and then the snack zone graphics and theme tune keep playing in the background 😆 I love it whenever he tries to claim it and the editing says "no"

  • There's also YaCy, which is a peer-to-peer search engine. You index whatever you want, and when you search, you connect to lots of other indices as well as your own.

I want to set up my own node at some point. My understanding is that the search results are hit and miss, but you have the power to improve things by building your own index of pages you want to search regularly. And this benefits everyone else too.

Since search indexing is so intensive, I think it's the right technical solution if you want a truly open and independent alternative.

  • This looks cool! I don't want to check another website each day though, I would love to have a Lemmy community with the main feed, similar to the hacker news communities.

  • Best episode? I may have been distracted while watching, so please don’t judge me for this, but I liked the previous episode better [...]

I'd have agreed with you last week, because every episode of the season has been the best yet in my eyes :D there were some really nice cuts and well edited moments in the last episode for sure.

For me I really liked the intensity of the latest episode, and the feeling that there was a lot at stake for Ben and Adam, because they really need to break through the north-eastern wall of chips.

What was up with the can selection? Did I miss something about how the challenge was written? Why did they buy soda cans, and not something in short and wide cans, like tuna? [...]

I had a look at the challenge card again, and it says "standard size cans". I presume what exactly that means is clarified more in their own private rules.

BTW how crazy was the crayon mastermind timing? [...]

Yeah, that was so close! I feel like it's rare for us to see the time pressure so viscerally.

  • Best episode of the season so far! The can scene was the most tense thing I've seen on TV for a long time. I loved the editing of the standoff with the fades between the two teams. And I'm gutted that Ben and Adam missed the final challenge by just 1 question, and they could've chosen to do 5 :(

The game design is awesome this year, I think it's my favourite design yet. This episode felt really strategic and intentional, and there was a sense of urgency about fortifying / breaking through which I really like. It feels really impactful to the rest of the series.

  • The idealistic approach would be: all content freely available, and ask readers to donate if they value it, to fund continual production of more work. E.g. Democracy for Sale. Even better if it's under a free content license.

The practical approach would be: make some content freely available, and put the rest behind a paywall. But the content should still be available in open formats like RSS, via a private feed. E.g. LWN, Stratechery.

  • Because they're probably doing ok, and they don't want to think about how much is out of their control, and how easily they could be in the same situation.

The idea that success is just down to hard work is comforting, because they think "if I just keep working hard then I'll be ok", and "I'm deserving of this lifestyle". It also lets them not feel any guilt or spend time thinking about those less fortunate - they can simply say "well it must be their fault".

  • Do you think it was right for Adam and Ben to put down 5 on each station down south to minimise their losses for the steal? I reckon that putting down 4 coins on a place you think it's unlikely for the other team to come back and challenge is effectively a waste of 4 coins, if you could use those coins later.

Meanwhile, if you didn't shed those 4 coins, and the other team got a 50% steal, they would steal 2 of your coins, resulting in a 4 coin swing. And, since it's not guaranteed the other team would win the steal, maybe it's worth not shedding coins for the sake of it, unless you wanted to fortify that area anyway?

That said, you dropping 4 coins to fortify an unimportant area is still more valuable than the other team gaining a net of 4 coins and being able to place them anywhere on the map.

All that said, I'm not sure at all how to value chips - maybe you should just earn and dump whenever possible and not worry about strategy until the final day? It's really difficult to foresee what the value could be.

  • It was hilarious watching a classic Ben and Adam risk ratchet where they gradually talk themselves up from 3 to 6 cans 😅 "I dunno man" and "it seems pretty stable!" while pulling this face:

That said, I think I agree with them, they seriously need the coins and if there's a time to go big, this is it!

  • I use taskwarrior for this. For example:

     shell

task add recur:monthly due:eom wait:due-3weeks clean mesh filter
task add recur:quarterly due:eoq wait:due-3weeks replace charcoal filter

There are quite a few web frontends to it too, although I haven't tried these out so not sure which to recommend.

  • It does amaze me how little challenge he received in the article for that.
