Proton launches privacy-focused Google Docs alternative: Docs in Proton Drive is an open-source, end-to-end encrypted collaborative document editor
  • I degoogled to Proton mail initially. I didn't like that I couldn't search my emails (a security thing or something? But annoying) and then their Drive was absolutely useless on macos. I had about 100gb and it couldn't sync even half of it.

After much help from support I eventually moved away to a combo of Fastmail, Mega and OnlyOffice.

  • “But I think the pressure at the moment needs to be for like-minded countries that share our values, to stand shoulder-to-shoulder

Definitely. The pressure should be on Australia to join Ireland, Norway and Spain.

  • Can you live without YouTube ?
  • Yeah I guess if you've been using it for a long time and have favourites built up that would work. I remember when YouTube started and it was pretty good, but with every video trying to game the algorithms I couldn't imagine trying to start afresh now.

  • Can you live without YouTube ?
  • I don't get the appeal of YouTube. I use it for maybe the odd music video or something, but often you'll just get someone's annoying commentary instead of the actual thing.

I live without it and it's great! Try it.

  • Thoughts about Posteo?
  • I just ditched Proton Unlimited after moving to it last year from Google. The Drive app just never worked properly. Ended up going with Fastmail for email as I'm in Australia anyway and so far they've been good.

  • Monterey on external SSD not showing in Startup Disk

I have a 2015 iMac 21.5" that has slowly ground down to crawl. I had this great idea of installing macos on an external SSD (Kingston 2TB) and run it from there instead but no matter what I try I can't get it to work.

At first I downloaded the installer for Monterey but the HDD isn't great and it kept crashing and restarting partway through.

Then I tried installing to the SSD from Recovery (internet recovery wouldn't get past wifi choice so had to use non-internet) but even though the installation went ok it continued to boot from the HDD and in Startup Disk the SSD wouldn't show at all.

Then I made a USB boot stick and did the same steps above with the same result.

The SSD has GUID map and I tried both Mac OS and APFS formatted.

Does anyone have an idea what might be going wrong? Thanks in advance!

    Local instance treated as remote

I'm not sure if I'm doing this wrong but when I browse Everything I can swipe posts away to hide them. But on my local instance when I swipe I get a message the post is on a remote instance. Is there a way to change this?

    Installing Batocera

I've tinkered with Linux installations before but the last time I made changes to a BIOS it looked 8-bit, not like a windows program (I use Macs, for reference).

I have a Dell Inspiron 5502 (2021) that I just want to remove Windows from and install Batocera for gaming, but I can't figure out how to wipe it.

I'm running Batocera from USB but when I go to "Install on a new disk" there are no targets available. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
