Monthly Self-Promotion thread (September 2023)
  • I launched a big 2.0 update to my album-focused music player Longplay just yesterday. I wrote an announcement post and there's also a detailed overview on MacStories. Feedback and questions are very welcome!

  • Microsoft shuts down Cortana, Apple should do the same with Siri
  • The title of the article doesn't really match the content, which doesn't suggest to fully nuke Siri but rather to abandon the current underlying technology for something that's using generative AI (like ChatGPT). That's a reasonable suggestion and most likely Apple is already working on this.

  • Elon Musk’s new AI company is staffed entirely by men
  • Maybe this says more about women than Elon Musk? Given a choice many women might not want to work for him...

  • Federation Lag-o-meter
  • Aye aye. I'm mildly excited.

  • Federation Lag-o-meter
  • This looks great. Is there any chance that this could be extended to include Kbin as well, since those instances federated with Lemmy, too?

  • Bluesky temporarily halts sign-ups because so many people are joining from Twitter
  • It is. They've temporarily disabled invite codes.

  • Identity in the Fediverse
  • I'm in the same boat. Would be good to have the ability to have a single identity that works across the fediverse. As a first step if you have your own domain anyway, it'd be cool to alias that to different underlying Mastodon/Kbin/Pixelfed/etc. accounts. It's possible to some small extend using the "Webfinger" protocol: https://philna.sh/blog/2022/11/23/alias-your-mastodon-username-to-your-own-domain-with-jekyll/

  • Reddit usage metrics fall thanks to CEO's plan to boost revenue
  • Honestly don't know, but is spez also following Twitter in letting go of many employees? A lot of the backlash to Twitter came from that. He's been saying that they aren't profitable and their cost per API call for third party apps implies that they are running a pretty inefficient ship...

  • Loving the richness of variety in fediverse
  • Give it a few weeks. It was the same on Mastodon during heights of the #TwitterMigration. Everyone was talking about how they left the ship, what's different about the new place, and keep talking about the sinking ship.

After a while the new place felt familiar and that talk got less, and those meta-conversations were replaced with conversations about other things. If we get to that on Kbin eventually, that'd be great.

  • Google is getting a lot worse because of the Reddit blackouts
  • There's a glimmer of hope that search engines lose relevance, and so will SEO and SEO-related spam.

  • Apple may be forced to change the Vision Pro’s name
  • If the WWDC videos are anything to go by, this will be called TNP – short for "This New Platform".

  • A small FAQ to hopefully help new users to kbin (updated June 11 17:00 GMT)
  • No worries. If you scroll to the very bottom there another text field to add a new comment, which then adds a new top-level thread to this post.

There's also an FAQ here: https://kilioa.org/m/kbinMeta@kbin.social/t/266

  • /kbin Translations
  • You need a Codeberg account and can then translate right on https://translate.codeberg.org/projects/kbin/kbin/.

However, Romanian hasn't yet been added as a language to translate, too, and the "Start new translation" button is disabled. Maybe @ernest first needs to either add that language manually or can enable that button for everyone.

  • A small FAQ to hopefully help new users to kbin (updated June 11 17:00 GMT)
  • Thanks for the write-up. I've been using Mastodon quite a bit the last few months, and I'm curious about how kbin interoperates with that with from a user perspective.

What happens if you you follow a kbin user from Mastodon? Do you see just their "posts" or also their replies to threads? Do you see when they post an article? Can a kbin user follow a Mastodon user?

How do hashtags interact between the two systems?

What happens if you follow a kbin magazine from Mastodon? I noticed that they appear with a "Group" tag on Mastodon if searching for that "user".

(Edit: I could navigate to this post from Mastodon and reply to it, but it didn't show up here yet. But maybe that's due to the temporarily broken federation.)
