Chess is a war game, so allowing political assassinations or allowing the King to die just doesn't make any sense. Assassination of the King would just mean that the next in line becomes the new King. Only the King can surrender. So in order to force an end to the war you need to trap the King. Killing the King does not end the war, it just creates a new King.

Pancake mix in particular benefits from the large scales at which the pre-mixed stuff is made. Measuring out those smaller proportions of dry powders precisely and accurately is much more difficult at home even if you opt for using a scale instead of measuring cups. Just read the ingredients list to avoid the brands that may include the extra binders and other ingredients you want to avoid.

I (and my entire class for a semester) have a remarkably similar story for one of our classes under a particular teacher. Turns out, they couldn't be bothered to actually grade any of the papers, so they gave out zeros expecting kids to come in and correct them later. Judge appointments work in a similar way, I assume other offices do as well. Judges often decide precisely when they are going to retire in order to manipulate how their replacement is chosen, by vote or by appointment. These positions SHOULD be mostly non-political and merit based in general. In reality, just like economics, politics is inevitably everywhere. The real solution here is to get out the vote for every election at every level, not just the big federal one every 4 years.

That's the way voting in a Republic, where you're not voting directly for every position, law, and amendment, should work. The Republic falls apart and corruption and manipulation of the public will becomes easier when people don't turn out to vote at the smaller election cycles. The death of local news plays into this too as it becomes much more difficult to stay informed about the people and politics of those smaller local elections. If you think our representative system is broken and needs to change, the solution is the same, get out and vote for every election and support local investigative journalism.

Dog-eared means that a corner got folded down (making a diagonal) on a page as a bookmark. A dog-eared book isn't necessarily beat-up beyond the damage to the corners of pages. Catty-cornered or kitty-cornered is adjacent to something on the diagonal, i.e. not orthogonally next to it like up, down, left, or right. So there is an argument to be made for a loose (coincidental) connection between those ideas, but I don't think they come from the same roots.

Yeah, dividing a circle into 360 parts, then subdividing those by 60, and further subdividing those by 60 makes so much more sense than just using ratio of a number fundamental to circles themselves.

God I wish people would stop trying to gift me cookware because they heard I liked to cook. They never have any idea what I need or what I would use and I never have enough room for all the junk.

I just had to throw out a bunch of pots and pans because they weren't compatible with my new range. Good fucking riddance! They were without exception cheap pieces that should have been tossed years ago, especially the non-stick varieties. I don't miss any of them and I'm glad of the excuse to recycle them.

Been shopping for a few replacement pans that are induction ready and several of them do have copper or aluminum cores to spread heat more evenly and quickly. All of them are wrapped in a layer of steel. Copper and aluminum shouldn't really be coming into direct contact with many foods anyway.

How do you pronounce the U? Do you pronounce mould like should, would, or could? Is your pronunciation of mould then closer to mud than old with an M in front?

Expensive certifications that your employer will reimburse you for that potentially increase your earnings potential and value in the job market if you do change employers? Are those worth getting? Yes. Employer not paying you for them? Still, maybe yes. Do you really need to ask? Or are you looking for an excuse to not do the thing recommended by your mentors and that's not giving you instant gratification and a dopamine hit (like this place does)?

Neither have I because they all take replaceable AA sized batteries and last literally months between changes or charges (if you get rechargeable AAs). Seems a much more robust design from my POV

For those that don't want to bother reading the article, to avoid listeria you should buy fresh and local whenever possible, avoiding prepared foods (especially those stored chilled for longer periods of time during shipping)and avoid storing chilled foods for long periods of time even if the shelf life indicates they would otherwise okay. Listeria thrives in cooler temps.

Just avoid making a mulch volcano around the base of the tree. That would be bad for the tree.
