Didn’t realize you were also in the industry. I think the word “Instantly” was my qualm. I don’t think anything with internet infrastructure can change in a time frame anyone would consider instant. Otherwise, I agree with you.

I love how they say “violent revolution is the only answer” while doing no violent revolutionary actions. Where are these armies of leftists ready to die for the cause exactly? I want to see left wing policies implemented but too many on the left just pick each other apart for minor differences instead of looking at the bigger picture. This is why MAGA has so much power with a minority of voters backing it.

Speaking as a high level ISP worker, you have no idea how archaic and disorganized the internet infrastructure of this country is. Nothing happens instantly, even if they made ISPs legally liable. The likely outcome of that would be jacked up rates and lots of workers thrown under the bus who are already overworked. Investor capitalism leeching all profits away from upgrading equipment and hiring enough workers to secure things properly is the issue. As it has become the issue with almost every major business in every industry in the west these days. Not saying legal liability is a bad idea, but it will still take years to get resolved even so. Internet should be a public utility anyway.

An authoritarian government as evil as China’s having power over that platform compromises it. Tiktok escalates content that hurts western governments but downplays content critical of China. How many times have you heard about the ongoing Uyghur genocide and the over 1 million Uyghurs still imprisoned in China on Tiktok? Israel's genocide of Palestinians is boosted everywhere because it makes America look bad. While all attention brought to work against genocide is good, it’s important to note China has their finger on the scale pushing down content against their interests. China does things just as worthy of Tiktok activism and it is ignored by the algorithm on purpose.

Decentralized social media is really the best option for public discourse in the long run.

Nuance is lost to agenda all the time sadly. That’s why discussing politics through memes is not helpful. It puts too much into black and white terms to fit the medium and almost nothing in life is that way.

The reason the right keeps kicking the left’s ass is because they band together for their end goal instead of picking each other apart in an election year. I’ve been leftist my whole life, I’m no neo-liberal as you state just for seeing the truth of this election. What is your solution? Is pissing on Biden every chance going to do anything to fix these policies? If we get Trump, do you see immigration getting better? Biden is getting pummeled in the polls for his perceived weakness on the border. He lightened the rules after he won last time and Republicans have been crucifying him on border security since and it’s getting traction in polls. Sometimes in a democracy, you have to make some concessions to keep the power to make change in your hands. How far has the strategy of purism gotten the left? This country has swung so much further right due to leftist infighting losing us elections. Now we have a right wing candidate with a plan to straight up end democracy, but still we are calling each other “not leftist enough” instead of focusing on the real enemies of progressivism.

None of these people post with any nuance. It’s all to cripple Biden any way they can. What is their end goal? I’m not happy with everything he does, but we have no other viable option in this election. Everything Biden does bad, Trump will do worse. Biden at least bends to pressure from the left.

No, I just don’t myopically go after one cause while ignoring others because manipulated social media points me in a direction. I am pointing out that people need to pay attention to the world, not only the issues bots push to the top of threads. The manipulation of algorithms by authoritarian troll farms has consequences for all the other suffering people in the world not getting heard. The pressure on Israel and the US has gotten Palestine support and aid. Others need that same support and you barely hear anything about other genocides online. That is no mere coincidence and people should be aware they are being manipulated away from other genocides on purpose by authoritarian regimes like China. The world needs to keep pressure on them over their Uyghur genocide and internment/enslavement as well. You can create awareness and pressure online about more than one movement at a time.

I again am not saying that what Israel is doing is okay or defending them at all. My point is people need to also be aware how much Chinese and Russian troll farms control the discourse across the internet by escalating atrocities that specifically make the US look bad and downplaying ones that make China or Russia look bad wherever possible. It is a major problem because those countries are manipulating genuine outrage to specifically target and weaken their enemies while drowning out the voices of other people also in need of support through genocide like the Uyghurs. It’s important because those groups get forgotten when all the discourse is manipulated towards one popular cause that the authoritarians get to hide their crimes behind. We can acknowledge Israels crimes and still be cognizant of the threats coming from authoritarian troll farms.

Funny how you never heard this much outrage on social media from the years of Uyghur genocide committed by China or Russia’s murders of it’s internal political opponents. Palestine is terrible and deserves attention, but it’s pretty clear this movement is getting a major boost from Chinese and Russian social media farms to influence US voter turn out.

Let them go off. January 6th showed they are incompetent. Let them push their violence again and put much of the public against them again right before the election. They won’t accomplish anything of importance and they will show their hateful agenda isn’t what most of this country wants. Faced with it directly, most Americans aren’t ready for insurrection and domestic conflict. I think any reactionary violent attack right now will be the end of their movement.

Facebook was blocked following the July 2009 Ürümqi riots because protestors with the East Turkestan independence movement were using Facebook as part of their communications network to organize attacks across the city. China has been banning this and other western social media for years. China bans so many western products and content, this is not a tit for tat or they would have done it years ago. The great firewall is insanely authoritarian. Too many Americans greatly underestimate the threat from China.
