It's messy to say the least. They've gone all in on the boxset format, but with everyone and their mother getting boxsets, it's near impossible to keep up with what there is and what's coming out, and all of it is extremely variable in quality.
I've been getting a lot of fatigue with Big Finish lately, as a lot of their recent stuff seems to be BIG, EPIC PLOT OF MASSIVE IMPORTANCE with very ephemeral big bads that are impossible for them to describe in the audio format and climaxes that are essentially a wall of noise that cannot possibly get across what is happening.
I think that Big Finish worked a lot better when it was trying to be Classic Who, as opposed to New Who, as the fast paced nature of New Who does not translate well to the audio drama format. That's not to say that all of the modern stuff is like this, but I've come across it a lot lately, and it's gotten a bit samey.
With rumours that RTD plans on building up a mini MCU/Star Trek style structure with the flagship main show launching multiple spin-offs, what spin-offs would you like to see, what spin-offs do you think we will see, and what's the wackiest spin-off you can come up with?
Bonus points if Big Finish haven't already done it!
Regular Doctor Who again.
But I'm really interested to see what RTD's new take on the show is going to be like. I have a feeling that while the specials might be more similar to RTD1, series 14 might take a very different shape. RTD has become a lot more jaded and cynical over the last decade, even more than he already was, and I expect that to shine through.
I expect to see more political satires like his first era, but while previously they came from a place of disappointment of the Blair years, now they are likely to come from a place of anger. He's never hid his dislike of the Tory governments we've had, and I expect that to show in his writing.
I'm expecting a darker core to the show, even if on the surface it should keep the fun camp that defined his last era.
He won't be going to jail, but it could fracture the Tories as they split into pro and anti Boris factions.
That is assuming that any others actually follow him and Dorries out of the door. I have a feeling they're counting on others to resign that will probably back out of it.
That's the problem with building up a gang of cowards with no spine.
