Interview: Kirsten Beyer On Writing An Iconic Villain As A Tragic Hero In ‘Star Trek: Khan’

  • I don't think it's controversial to say that the Disney deal has ultimately been a bust - I thought it was a good idea at the time, and I'm among those who think the "new" series has been creatively fine, more or less, but there's just too much uncertainty.

Unfortunately, the BBC seems to be in a bit of a state right now, as well...

  • I did not know this, but apparently Earl Boen passed away in 2023, which would make casting...difficult.

I've liked Naveen Andrews ever since he was an underutilized breakout star on "Lost", and he has the advantage of actually being of Indian descent. I'll be very curious to see how much range he gets to show as this series winds on.

  • Usually they would have saved that gritty stuff for DS9.

  • This episode confirmed my biggest fear: I'm bad at focusing on audio stories, and will have to choose when to listen carefully.

As far as the story goes, I'm happiest to see that they're doing some character rehab for Marla McGivers.

They don't seem to be doing similar rehab for Khan himself, which is fine by me, but they are highlighting his ability to turn on a dime and go full tyrant at the drop of a hat.

  • Okay, I'm convinced - thread is up.

  • I've never seen any indication that taxes had anything to do with it. I think they just gave the exclusive license to Netflix (which has since expired, at least for season one).

  • I'm open to it, if there's enough interest.

    Speak now, people!

  • Paramount tends to give other platforms temporary exclusive licenses to the films.

It's not perfect, but I find justwatch.com useful when trying to figure out where things are available in my country.

  • Star Trek will also launch the official anniversary Hub – StarTrek.com/60 – the home for the yearlong celebration. The hub will provide a look at the calendar of activities including exciting new partnerships, events, and opportunities for fan participation. Fans can now visit the hub and sign up to be among the first to learn about special events, new merchandise and more.

Nothing new or interesting there yet - might be one to keep an eye on.

  • Two episodes (if you can call a 3-4 minute short an "episode") will supposedly go live today, so, uh, if you're a preschooler, let us know what you think!

  • stardates

Why do you do this to yourself?

  • Any injury update?

Nothing yet, and assuming he's going through concussion protocol, and knowing O'Shea, I don't expect an update until the back half of the week. It's a bad situation - I love Streveler, but he's not a starter.

  • A heartbreaker - I had to step out just after Collaros went down and Streveler came in, and...maybe it's better that way.

The odds of playoff success seem to be dwindling in Winnipeg.

  • "It becomes a profoundly difficult thing to scale that infrastructure in a way that allows you to scale growth in the retail sector," he says. "So can it work? I think it could, but it would be a very difficult and painful process to get established and to grow."

One of the Federated Co-ops, Red River Co-op, ceased grocery operations in 1983 - it wasn't until the Sobeys/Safeway merger in 2014 that they were able to pick up four of the Winnipeg locations that the new megacorp were forced to sell, and re-enter the market. They now have nine grocery locations in and around the city.

It's hard to take a lesson from that, since you can't count on those circumstances to repeat every often, but inheriting existing infrastructure certainly seems to help.

  • There was a little Metron twinkle in the distance right before it happened.

  • Well I'm happy for her - it sounds like it's a good thing that she reconsidered her life goals, and found something more fulfilling.

  • I really think you're putting words in her mouth.

"It felt impossible to go back to that kind of a life and I didn’t want to sacrifice my time with my family" has absolutely nothing to do with the process of transferring credentials to Canada, and everything to do with the job itself. “I feel that I can be a better nurse than a physician" speaks for itself.

There are plenty of stories about the challenges of transferring credentials. This, by her own account, as quoted in this article, is not one of them.
