KVM switch - Any recommendations?
  • I use one of these to control 2 PCs and one laptop with a single keyboard and mouse. It could actually run a 4th machine off the same keyboard and mouse if I wanted to cram another into my workspace.

Sharing two 4k monitors between the three as well, though the screens have nothing to do with the switch controlling keyboard and mouse.

Used some double sided tape to attach the little controller switch to the top of the docking station connecting my laptop to the displays and network as it's a light little thing that would fly all over the place otherwise. Been using the same one for over 2 years now and it's been working great!

Tried some more expensive solutions in an attempt to tie my monitors and network together along with the kbm and everything I tried had some kind of unacceptable compromise, like bad video quality.

  • Fallout London's project lead is not taking the surprise drop of Fallout 4's update well: 'That has, for a lack of a better term, screwed us over'
  • Yup, if you use mods, it's a good idea to set the game to update on launch through the game's properties menu in its steam library listing.

Since a F4SE nodded game is going to launch through the script extender's launcher, that keeps the game from updating automatically when starting a play session.

I also like to make a copy of my game folder and save it off in another drive so I have a backup.

  • [Game] Darkwatch - play as a vampire gunslinger hunting down other monsters
  • Still love this game. I fire it up on my ps2 emulator every once in a while. Still have a working ps2, but I can crank up the graphics/resolution on the emulator so that it looks better than the original experience. It is pretty dated now and had some silly stuff (like ghost Cassidy as a guide) , but I really enjoyed the core gameplay mechanics and setting.

Haven't looked at them in ages but I also have the Art of Darkwatch book and a copy of Heavy Metal magazine that covers the game. There were some cool weird west levels in Red Dead Revolver too.

  • Men over 30, what type of wall art do you have in your home office or gaming room?
  • A couple of Mexican lobby cards from '50s scifi movies, couple of vision boards with a bunch of kid art from my son along with the vision board stuff, pictures of the wife and son, and a painting my wife made for me of my dog, Telstar - who passed a couple of years back.

  • How do you address a letter to an army soldier or even a navy sailor on a ship?
  • Should be able to send to the service member's unit at FPO or APO depending on if they're in the army, navy, etc. This page https://www.usps.com/ship/apo-fpo-dpo.htm has more info.

You can absolutely receive mail and packages when deployed in the military, even during wartime. When I was in the USMC, getting mail while out in the field was a bit of a psychological life line.

  • Night of the Comet (1984)
  • Loved this movie when it came out too, though I'm pretty sure the car was a BMW convertible or some such. Not as cool as an 80s Countach, but not too shabby..! The 4k release is on my list of must score discs.

  • The MakeMKV forums actually have a ton of good info on getting set up to rip 4k. Ripping a 4K copy of Ghostbusters Afterlife that just landed today as we "speak" on my LG WH16NS40 that's been flashed to think it's an NS60, courtesy of the MakeMkv folks. I tried a much more expensive Pioneer drive before getting the LG, which went back to Amazon after I discovered it wouldn't access my inaugural 4K disc - Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. The LG was less than half the price and has worked great on every disc I've thrown at it. I play my rips on my computer to confirm function, but I watch on my projector, which I finally ceiling mounted this summer.

After years of indifferently having half-set up Plex servers running on various computers in the house I've been bitten a bit by the disc acquisition/ ripping bug. Been having a lot of fun scouring eBay for the cheapest/highest res version available of all my favorite movies.

  • I could use a GPU recommendation
  • eBay is your friend here. Looks like there are a good number of turn key Nvidia GTX 1070 cards available right at your budget from some highly rated sellers, using this search string in the computer components and parts -> graphics/video cards category yielded 160 results:

1070 -broken -read -only -repair -empty -box

Here's a link to the actual search :

    https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=1070+-broken+-read+-only+-repair+-empty+-box&_sacat=27386&_odkw=980+-broken+-read+-only+-repair+-empty+-box&_osacat=27386&LH_BIN=1

be sure to make generous use of '-' terms as seen in my search string to filter out the giant wad of irrelevant/useless results that'll come up, and read the recent/seller feedback for the sellers you are considering doing business with and stay away from single digit feedback sellers with pricing that is far cheaper than expected for the item - (e.g. a $150 brand-new RTX 3080 from a seller with a feedback score of 5 is very unlikely to be legit 🫥) and you should find what you are looking for. Good luck!

  • Hyperloop One to Shut Down After Failing to Reinvent Transit
  • A) I applaud you for your masterful continuation of the pelagic theme of this discussion about Elon porpoisely allowing this project to flounder into Davy Jone's locker.

    B) TIL that an anglerfish lure is called an esca and that a sufficiently literate person can seamlessly weave such an unusual word into this net of fishy discourse.. Bravo!

  • No More Will to Play
  • I'm already playing with around 175 mods, which has eliminated a lot of the stupider issues with the game (e.g. broke merchants that make it impossible to conveniently sell off loot, crazy high ship registration fees, those mind bogglingly awful crowd NPCs, etc. etc.).

TBH, the main quest is incredibly uninteresting to me (never completed the Skyrim main quest either, though I've had a blast playing a 2500+ modlist for many hours in both SE and VR) but I've been having a lot of fun scanning planets and taking on random quests in various locations.

I think if it weren't for the mods that already exist I'd find Starfield to be too dull and grindy to play for more than a few hours, but with them I'm staying engaged enough to buy the modding community more time to work its magic. Guess it's kinda sad that this game needs mods to pull its bacon out of the fire, but cool that the modders have already accomplished as much as they have.

  • 1st time house buyer, potentially serious structural issues found... anyone have advice re negotiating price reduction / if I should pull out?
  • Personally, unless you really love the house or location I'd walk away. I'd also be super surprised if issues found by a structural engineer can be fixed, particularly if you have to hire someone for a significant amount of that work, for just 15k, as after the structure is correct there's a bunch of other aspects of the building's construction that will have been disrupted and need fixing. If you need to hire a contractor for repairs it'd probably be more realistic to budget 50-80k for repairs.

If nearby homes exist in turnkey condition for 100k that's your better bet. Not being willing to turn the electricity on in order to help a prospective buyer check out the place is a huge red flag with sirens attached as well. Structural problems can be very bad, electrical problems can burn the place down and kill everyone inside.

Walk away would be my suggestion.

Hatchling Carolina Mantis wondering what I'm doing in its face. Here's hoping these little guys can bring the fight to the enemy bugs in our garden!
