  • Great to see Discovery cast getting picked up for principal/star roles in new projects.

  • If the actors’ contracts are for 7 calendar years but production is stretched out as is has been due to the pandemic and the strike, it’s hard to see how more than 5 seasons are possible without severe escalation in labour costs for US talent.

  • Contract length is a fair point. But so is the over reliance on US SGA talent in a show that’s trying to reach a global audience and represent a future that’s diverse.

Discovery had only five seasons but in calendar years, in which contracts are written, it was seven years from production of the pilot. So, regardless of the impact of the strikes, further seasons would have required higher salaries for Martin-Green, Rapp, Cruz and Wiseman.

One has to wonder if that was a consideration in the decision on Lower Decks as well.

Also, while federal and provincial governments give significant tax credits for the ACTRA-contract labour costs of Canadian and Ontario resident actors (50%), up until Rennie joined this season the Discovery main cast were all full SGA scale, although the seasonal ‘big bass’ have all been Canadian or resident since season 2. That can make a huge difference to the overall cost.

All to say, if talent salaries were the key driver of decisions, CBS Studios should put more casting in the hands of their Canadian casting director.

One has to then of Canadian/resident main cast will also put a cap on the potential number of seasons for SNW.

It will be interesting to see whether CBS Studios will go for the tax credit when they cast the cadet roles for Starfleet Academy.

  • One gets the feeling that Paramount senior management have been paying more attention to review-bombed scores on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb etc. and YouTubers than to actual viewing minutes and audience size.

While Nielsen stats are only for the United States, it’s clear that Paramount has been doing vastly better by Discovery than any of the naysayers have claimed.

  • It’s disappointing in its limitations, yes, but another step in bringing warp-driven travel into a more mainstream conversation and line of theoretical research in physics.

As with Albucierre’s proof, theoretical research always starts with the corner solutions and odd cases to reduce the variables.

  • Ok, I can buy that, but it means that it created a true parallel universe and not a branch in the Prime timeline.

This could be viewed as consistent with the Kelvin universe 24th century officer not being able to survive in the 32nd century Prime Universe.

  • The specific point of divergence was shown in Star Trek 2009, otherwise it’s a real reboot and offside the television franchise.

  • But TrekMovie has one with the Breen that’s not on the StarTrek.com official site.

Seems like a quality control issue in sending out the embargoed emails.

  • Well, now I know who was the executive on the org chart responsible for all of Viacom and more recently Paramount Global’s stunningly awful corporate strategic communications.

There have been a lot of senior or management changes one tier down since the merger, but perhaps what was really needed was for Baklish and his top VPs to exit.

  • Yes please!!!!

I have absolutely been waiting for this to be released to Steam.

Finding games that I can share with our teens on Steam is challenging but important for keeping connected. So, we’re often looking for games that appeal to more than one of us. When we buy it’s 2, 3 or 4 keys. Having one for free to start would be great.

Resurgence really looks to offer the kind of role playing that makes sharing the journey in parallel fun.

  • These are lovely and something a child might actually play with.

Not everything should or needs to be for collectors.

On the other hand, making preschool toys for show that was in the air more than a half century ago is bizarre. I would have loved these as a small child in the 1960s but the the toys should reflect a show kids would actually be watching now.

  • The whole run is less than 8 hours total, and there’s several episodes in there that really bridge between TOS and the movies and TNG, even if they’ve been cut down for the format.

But here are a few other suggestions…

‘The Slaver Weapon’ was written by Larry Niven himself, adapting his story ‘The Soft Weapon’, and making Kzinti a Star Trek canon species.

‘The Practical Joker’ gives us the holographic simulator in the Rec Room, and the first ‘space anomaly leads to computer misfunctions and Holodeck insanity’

‘Mudd’s Passion’ gives us Scotty and the Caitain second Communications Officer Lt M’Ress in an unintended romantic twist.

Uhura gets command in ‘The Lorelei Signal.’

‘More Tribbles, More Troubles’ is an essential part of Tribble lore.

‘The Time Trap’ and ‘The Jihad’ are great for showing off a wider range of sentient species.

  • The article suggests that the environment plays a significant role in gasturlation, especially the chemistry.

If identical twins develop in the same uterine environment, there would be greater likelihood of the same genes expressing.

  • Another helpful resource, although very much oriented to knitters and what’s available in the USA only, is https://yarnsub.com/.

If the pattern calls for a specific yarn, and they have it listed (even discontinued yarns), this site can give good guidance on what yarn could be substituted.

  • Yes, front side of the stiches only will make a significant difference, and a looser fabric.

But it’s also true that as we become more seasoned at crochet our tension will change. If you’re too tight or too loose, definitely do another test swatch with a different hook-size.

Last, while the measurements are for a 4x4” swatch, you really have to have a bigger square to get a true measurement of the tension. The edges do affect things. That’s why, I always go for a 6x6” swatch and measure inside of that.

  • Google is wrong. Aran is a thicker yarn on average. Worsted is between DK and Aran.

Here’s just the top of the yarn menu from Canada’s largest wool independent store. Wool-Tyme. As we get EU, and UK yarn as well as US, the full range is represented.

Suggest that the OP look through their sizes to see what UK yarns fall under ‘worsted.’

    https://wool-tyme.com/collections/yarn

  • A worsted is a bit finer than an Aran, heavier than a DK.

Knitting with worsted normally gives 20 stitches per 10 cm/4in in stocking stitch. Aran would give 18, DK 22.

With crochet, the hook size and stitch type will make a huge difference. If you use the stated hook with a worsted instead of an Aran weight you’ll have a more open fabric. That may be what you want, especially with a cotton.

Best advice to give is to do a sample of at least 15 by 15 cm / 6 x 6 inches. That will give you a benchmark of the stitch size, the amount of yarn used and the stiffness or drape of the fabric you’re creating.

  • Looks interesting, and an interesting way to work with nuts. Always looking for other GF options and I do use almond flour in a lot of recipes.

That said, while can understand not tolerating gluten free grains such as millet, teff, sorghum, rice or corn, I’m not sure why there aren’t other flours and starches you can work with.

I’m having a hard time understanding why an intolerance would also extend to tubers (potato flour & starch; manioc - cassava flour & tapioca flour; sweet potato flour; arrowroot starch); flower seeds (buckwheat/sarrasin flour) or legumes (Romano, fava or chickpea flour) but not nuts.
